Book Blurb

Two years after riding off into the sunset with ranch owner Rand Holloway, Stefan Joss has made a tentative peace with his new life. But the course of true love never does run smooth. Rand wants him home on the ranch; Stef wants an exit strategy in case Rand ever decides that living with him is more than he bargained for. Finally, after recognizing how unfair he’s being, Stef makes a commitment, and Rand is over the moon.

When Stef gets the opportunity to prove his devotion, he doesn’t hesitate—despite the risk to body and soul—and Rand realizes that it’s not only Stef who needs to learn the art of compromise. He can’t have everything his way if he wants to keep the man he loves. Both of them need to give so they can discover, together, that sometimes life’s best surprises come after the sunset.

Book Review

Seeing as how the 'Timing' series is one of my all-time favorites and I've read the three books in the series many times over, you can understand my thrill when I discovered the author was re-releasing them, AND adding content to books two and three. Rand and Stefan have always been a part of my favorite couples list and 'After the Sunset' is set two years into their relationship so I get an even better feel of how they are on a day to day basis.

“And as I’ve said a million times, it’s not important that you can’t ride a horse.”

“I can certainly ride a horse,” I declared indignantly.

“No, you can ride your horse because you basically raised her after her mama passed. But any other horse would not allow you to just sit there and do nothing.”

“What’re you—”

“Your horse does everything, Stef. You just hold the reins. She runs when she wants, she walks when she wants, rides into streams when she wants.” He chuckled, his hand sliding down my back and slipping under my T-shirt. “She loves you, same as that damn fool dog. But if you got on any other horse, you’d break your neck.”

I love Stef. I'm pretty sure it's obvious but I thought I'd say it again. Even with all of his quirks and his continuing insecurity that somehow, someday, Rand is just going to decide he has to leave, Rand is crazy in love with the man. Considering Rand is one of the most alpha (non-paranormal) men I've ever met - like not many steps above caveman - being loved by him is something we could all use. Unfortunately in this day and age, most non-fiction men like that are abusers.

The first book in this series dealt with the four days of whirlwind romance that culminated in Rand and Stef falling in love. I got the opportunity to meet some of Rand's family outside his mom and sister, but in this book I got a whole look at family dynamics and some dishonest shenanigans coming from Rand's uncle (his deceased dad's brother), and a couple of cousins (misled saps), in their attempt to get some grazing land rights back that belong to Rand. I'm not going into the whole situation because you have to read it to believe it, but take my word for it when I say Rand's extended family doesn't know what hits them when they have to deal with Stef.

I'm just going to tantalize you with a few peeks at the goings-on that Stef gets up to while Rand is off helping a cousin. There's a rodeo, you see, and the Red Diamond has to participate in order to keep those grazing rights I mentioned earlier (which is partly how the uncle thought to screw Rand over) and so Stef takes some hands and goes. You're picturing this, aren't you? Stef helps run the bachelor charity auction and, well, he's in his element, and that's enough about that. He jumps into the ring after an enraged bull has charged Glenn, Rand's cousin, with no regard for his own safety to protect Glenn from getting squished. Oh, Stef is SO lucky that Rand isn't there. And that's all I'm telling. Believe me, there's plenty more.

“And what the fuck were you doing parading around in those jeans and that shirt last night?”

The way he was bouncing from one thing to another told me just how worked up he was. “Parading?”

"You are not allowed to put on your fuck-me clothes if I ain’t there to do the fucking!”
And for whatever reason, I could not stop smiling. “Is that right?”

I really can never get enough of Rand and Stefan. This is such an incredible story and there are so many revelations at the end that it just about makes my eyes cross. I'm beyond thrilled that the author decided to add content to 'After the Sunset'. The additional scenes, particularly at the end, added that bit of oomph that I didn't even know I was missing. Now I can't wait to see what's been done to Glenn's story. Thank you, Mary, I love these men and the books!
