Karl Vinter joins the staff at Crofton Hall as the new under butler. He's too busy to bother with relationships, but he's more than happy to explore a friends with benefits arrangement with gardener, Val Blake. He couldn't imagine a more perfect way to settle into is his new life at Crofton Hall. Pity pesky things like feelings start to get in the way.

Meanwhile, Ben Redbourn, 16th Earl of Crofton, is trying to find the perfect way to propose to Ashley, his boyfriend. He's going to need all the help he can get, especially after at least one misstep and that he's never given Ashley any indication he wants to get married.

Book Review

“Every moment is precious. Don't wait for the perfect moment. Grab it at the earliest. If you wait too long for the perfect moment, the moment will pass you by.” ~Anil Sinha

After a discouraging dismissal from his previous employment for being gay, Karl Vinter has found a more suitable job, one that seems like a better fit for him. He is content to keep his head down and do his job. Karl is content until Val Blake comes along and causes him to believe he wants more.

Val has been working as a gardener at Crofton Hall for a while now. After running his own company, he appreciates being able to go home at a scheduled time and not have to carry work home with him. After recently getting out of an abusive relationship, Val is in no hurry to put himself back out there. He is attracted to Karl, the newly hired underbutler but feels he has nothing to offer anyone relationship-wise yet is happy to be friends with him.

When the attraction continues to grow, Karl proposes that since neither of them wants to become permanently involved with anyone, a friends-with-benefits arrangement might work for them. Karl thinks that he will be okay with this, that he can handle the situation without breaking his heart, but the longer they are together, the more Karl realizes that he has made a mistake because he has fallen in love with Val.

'Below Stairs' is a delightful addition to the 'Modern Crofton Chronicles' series. While the main story is about Karl and Val, the secondary theme is Ben trying to find the perfect time and way to propose to Ashley. Ashley would have been happy if Ben had proposed at MacDonald's! I wanted to tell him that the time or place wasn't as important as the gesture itself. Thanks, Rebecca, for bringing Karl and Val together.
