Graduate student Cameron is on the trail of an ancient Chinese artifact, a ruby with a history. When he meets adventurer Poe in Mexico, he spills the beans on his quest, and Poe sees dollar signs as well as the hottest professor he’s ever met.

They head off to the salt flats and mountains of Utah, searching for a lost wagon train from the eighteen hundreds. What they find is danger beyond normal comprehension and a stone that drives men to insanity.

Soon Poe’s only concern is saving Cam, but to do that, he’ll need help from some old friends and a few new ones. When it becomes too late to turn away from their quest, Poe and Cam put themselves and their friends in deadly peril. It will take every bit of their talents and courage to make it through and survive the Dragon’s Eye.

Book Review

‘Eye of the Dragon’ delivers on the promise this title makes: it is an adventure full of mystery and danger, there are elements of horror that had me wanting to close my eyes (like I do in scary movies), and the central object of the main characters’ quest makes the story veer into the supernatural. From the intriguing prologue all the way through to the end, there is an aura of secrecy and impending doom that had me fear for Cam and Poe’s safety. It isn’t very clear what the problem is until the last few chapters, and then the problem really ramps up. It’s a good thing that Max and Morgan from book one are there to help, as well as some other friends who are ready to risk their lives to deal with the ancient Chinese ruby that seems to have a mind all its own.

Poe is an oil man, but I would call him more of a “professional adventurer” with a love of the good life – hence he is on the beach in Mexico at the beginning of this story and ends up ogling Cam. As it turns out, Poe is a bit of a mercenary and will do what gets him paid. Principles are not his strong suit, but he has got curiosity and courage out the wazoo. Since he is all about having fun and Cam’s quest sounds like just the thing for him to get away from cold oil rigs, he manages to convince Cam that he can help find the lost wagon train in the mountains of Utah and maybe keep him safe.

Cam is a researcher for the University of Texas and on the trail of a great mystery that is supposed to be a secret, yet he can’t resist telling Poe about it. He doesn’t reveal everything right away but enough to pique Poe’s interest – and a good thing that is too! Cam is not a fighter and not really good at protecting himself, and he is intelligent enough to realize that he can do with some help. Little does he know exactly how dangerous his expedition will become!

Cam and Poe start out as strangers, but it doesn’t take them long to give in to their attraction and fall into bed. In fact, one meeting on the beach does it – and it’s the beginning of lots and lots of physical activity of the intimate kind. It bears repeating - I mean lots! With Cam’s strengths being very different from Poe’s they actually end up complementing each other well even outside the bedroom. Intimacy soon follows the purely physical attraction, and as they build trust while exploring the mysteries of the lost ruby, they fall in love. And that love might just save their lives, if they manage to survive the powers that want to tear them apart, that is.

If you like your romances with a touch of horror and lots of danger, if research into the past and mysterious artifacts are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that contains horror, humor, some very hot loving, and a definite excursion into the supernatural, then you will probably like this novella. It’s entertaining, might scare you into biting your nails, and is super-hot throughout.
