Book Review

“Love is not a feeling of happiness. Love is a willingness to sacrifice.” ~ Michael Novak

After their last great adventure, Wes, of ‘Give up the Ghost’ by Jenn Burke, and his friends are ready for some downtime. Hudson and Iskander have opened an “ordinary” detective agency. It is not exciting, but it is safe and pays the bills.

When Lexi tells Wes about Kee, her gender-fluid friend, who is having strange occurrences at the LGBT youth center they are running, Wes’s interest is piqued. Wes wants to help, but when he asks Hudson about doing an investigation, Hudson, in no uncertain terms, tells Wes that they do not take on paranormal cases. Wes is disappointed and frustrated but he does not give up. After convincing Hudson that they may be the only ones who can help, he agrees to let Wes and Lexi look into it. When they do, Wes is surprised by all the ghosts who are inhabiting the center. Seeing the ghosts in such a discernible way is not what Wes is used to; it freaks him out and he has to leave without investigating further.

Wes has a secret he has been keeping from everyone; he is afraid his friends and family will see him differently if he tells them. During their last exploit, events caused his magi to increase exponentially. Beside his normal being a not-ghost and being able to slip between the living world and the other, his powers are almost godlike. Strange things start happening whenever he is around. Monstrous creatures, imps, begin appearing in the living world. Wes and his friends quickly surmise that there must be tears in the fabric between the living world and the other side. They need to figure out where they are and how to repair them before something much worse than annoying little imps come through.

Meanwhile Wes and Lexi continue to investigate the strange events at the LGBT center. They discover a strange contraption. While he and Lexi are investigating the continuing incidents in the center’s barn, they discover another device, similar to the first. During their visit, someone rushes past them and pushes Lexi out of the hayloft. She falls, is knocked unconscious, and is rushed to the hospital. Wes and his friends wait for her to regain consciousness, hoping she will be okay, but are fearing the worst.

This series does not tell your “ordinary” ghost stories. They include shape shifters, vampires, witches, and other magical beings. Like the first story, Jenn creates a complex, action-filled story, full of mystery, suspense, and an unusual twist on conventional knowledge of how the arcane works. It’s weirdly wonderful and stimulating, a combination of ghost and love story. As the second in the series, with all the introductions and back stories made, I was able to slip right into the story. Wes and his friends are like a huge, wonderful, whacky family to whom I have become attached. Thanks, Jenn, for the awesome story. Hopefully I will see Wes and the gang in another adventure sometime soon.
