Book Blurb

Fear of being like his unfaithful father has put high walls around senior litigator Asher Caldwell’s heart. Can former district attorney Zach Richardson knock them down to reveal the passionate man beneath the commitment-phobic workaholic, or will Zach’s own jealousy destroy what they’re trying to build?

A new life and a new love—that’s what Zach’s hoping for when he leaves the DA’s office and lets his friends give him a makeover. But the jury’s still out on whether the experiment was a success. His new look gets the attention of his boss and secret crush, Asher Caldwell, and leads to a seduction. Unfortunately, to Zach’s horror he learns that Asher assumed he was a paid escort. Asher is equally mortified to discover he had sex with an employee. Even so, the encounter meant a lot to both men, and they want to give dating a shot. Their romance born out of mistaken identity might work if Zack can trust Asher to be satisfied with the love of only one man… and if Asher can trust himself.

Book Review

Cases of mistaken identity usually lead to disaster – or at the very least some major issues-problems. So it was nice to see the author use a misunderstanding about who was who to set up the beginning of a relationship. Not that the road to better understanding was easy, even after clearing up the initial confusion. Asher has issues with commitment and his family, Zach has a great family but lacks self-confidence, and building trust does not come easy to them. Jealousy raises its ugly head, well-meaning friends add stress to an already strained situation, and complications – what with two lawyers involved – are not easily dealt with.

Zach has wanted to find “the one” for a while but has not had much luck. He has a hopeless, or so he thinks, crush on his boss, Asher, and not many other prospects. When abovementioned case of mistaken identity leads to a night of hot sex, it becomes clear that there may be interest from Asher’s side as well. As shocked as Zach is, he takes the opportunity for what it’s worth and jumps heart-first into dating the guy.

Asher may be a successful lawyer, but he has so many personal issues (from a strained relationship with his father to total commitment phobia) that he can’t enjoy his success. Meeting Zach and feeling an interest beyond the bedroom is a shock to Asher’s system, but he does not shy away from trying something new. I had to give him credit for that, even if he needs a lot of help otherwise.

As Zach and Asher struggle, Christmas comes closer and Zach’s family gets involved. It all sounds really good until a misunderstanding tears Zach and Asher apart – and I was ready to try to knock some sense into Zach this time. What a mess he creates! The lack of communication almost ends all hope for both men, but in the end, a touch of Christmas magic (and some good old common sense!) changes things for the better.

If you like lawyers who struggle with their personal lives, if two men with issues trying to define the boundaries of their relationship are your thing, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with lots of drama and several very hot physical encounters, then you will probably like this novella. I think the ending was just perfect for these two.
