Book Blurb

Pediatrician Luce Wright’s bad breakup gets worse when his drunk ex drives a car through his house a week before Christmas. His whole family is coming over in just a few days, and he can’t have a hole with a tarp over it in the middle of his dining room.

Fortunately his neighbor’s son is moving back into town, and he owns a construction company. Can Luce and his homemade cookies persuade Darren to mend the hole in the house… and maybe the one in Luce’s heart too?

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2019 Advent Calendar "Homemade for the Holidays."

Book Review

I specifically chose this story to read because as soon as I read the description, I knew this would bring back memories. You see, many years ago my family and I were hanging out in our kitchen working on finishing up the Thanksgiving dishes when we heard a thud. Going to look we discovered a car lodged in the wall/picture window of our living room! Unlike Luce in this story, no one was intoxicated when this accident occurred, simple gravity was at fault as the young woman had neglected to put her parking brake on when she parked at the top of a steep driveway. Regardless, I could certainly understand Luce’s concerns especially since this is his first Thanksgiving to host his entire family as his mom has finally passed the reins as she’s getting on in years.

Luce is adorable as the flustered pediatrician worried his neighbor is bringing over her much younger son, seeing as how Darren just finished college, and Luce knows his neighbor is trying to matchmake. Darren is just as worried believing, from all his mother has said, that Luce is in his sixties and is just an old country pediatrician. The looks on their faces when they realize the truth is priceless. The fact that Darren can get the work done on Luce’s home in time for Christmas is just the topping on the sundae.

‘Hole-Hearted’ was a little too insta for me and I think it would have worked fine if the entire story had been a mite longer. However, since this is a short holiday story, I can’t be too upset. It is, after all, very adorable and filled with laughter and the beginnings of true feelings.
