Book Review

This is an amazing book, one of those where the blurb doesn't really do the story enough justice. But then, I think that would be difficult because there are so many layers to this story that it's almost impossible to convey in a short summary.

What intrigued me most about this book was the delicate balance between "murder and mayhem" around the serial killer who finally got caught, Honeybone's grim determination/obsession about bringing him to justice, and the almost humorous tone of voice in places - which provides much-needed relief. I can see how this story will need more than one volume to play out. There is the question around the serial killer's survival, at least in Honeybone's mind, since the body was never found. There is Kaia, the girl Honeybone saved from dying when their plane crashed, whom he shares a special bond with. There is his ex-lover Rongo who seems to want to give their relationship another go. And then there's his new lover, the French chef Jean-Luc, who offers Dean a new kind of life that is less dark than chasing after murderers.

The settings and descriptions of the Australian backdrop were superb and the characters felt like people I know, they were so real. It will be fascinating to see how all of this will play out. Reading this story was like watching a multi-faceted diamond glitter in the sun. Every time I turned a page I discovered another way of looking at things. I totally loved it!
