Book Blurb

Declan Kelly’s a closeted bisexual cop in a Southern military town, still reeling from his recent divorce. When he’s assigned to work undercover at a gay bar, he meets a gorgeous guy who seems like a likely suspect in the recent robberies of club-goers—but who instead turns out to be a Canadian Mountie named Tupper, temporarily stationed at nearby Fort Bragg for anti-terrorism training.

Dec and Tupper have a steamy evening together, and Tupper wants more, but Dec’s afraid of needing anyone again—especially someone who’s only going to be around for a short time. As they get closer and their nights together get even hotter, Dec has to choose between safe loneliness and the risky possibility of love.

Book Review

Humor and serious criminal investigations don’t usually mix, but ‘In Another Country’ worked for me because it delivered exactly what the blurb promises: lots of heat and only a small dose of detective work. Set in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1997, this is a time when there were not exactly a lot of options for two men who wanted more than an occasional encounter, not when both of them work in law enforcement. So while there is lots of fun to be had while Declan, an American detective, and Tupper, a Canadian Mountie on terrorism training, get to know each other, theirs is not an easy romance.

Declan’s wife of ten years has recently left him, and it came close to destroying him. And even though he is using his singledom to venture into some one-night-stands with strangers, the idea of having a relationship with anyone, only to probably lose them again, is scary for him. Meeting Tupper puts a lot of what he believes in question, and his journey to figure out what he wants is a big part of this story.

A traditional murder mystery or police procedural this is not – but if you’re looking for an entertaining story around what law enforcement officers might get up to in their personal lives, then this might be the right story for you. The way Declan and Tupper keep distracting each other, followed by promises to do better, only to find themselves focusing on anything but finding the suspect was written well and very entertaining. The more serious aspects of figuring out how to make a shared life possible added some depth, and the ending is as hard-earned as it is wonderful.

If you like (mostly) entertaining romances set in recent history, if you want to find out how two officers of the law deal with falling for each other, and if you’re looking for a read that balances humor, heat, and a man learning he can have the kind of future he has never dared dream of, then you might like this novella.
