Book Review

There are werewolves in the world of the “Wolf Pack’ series, but they are a little different from “the usual” type of lycanthrope I have previously encountered in fiction. They are secretive, but there is only one fraternity that initiates new members, and the wolf gene is recessive, so that two humans can have werewolf offspring. That is how Grey never knew he was different – until his parents reveal the truth just before he leaves for college. It isn’t the only issue Grey has to deal with – his lifelong friendship with Bleu is a problem as well. A lot of things are not very clear yet at the end of this first book of the series, so get ready for everything to feel a little strange.

Bleu and Grey grow up together and are friends – until things change in high school. Grey becomes rough and dominant and, basically, turns into an a**hole of the first order. Had he treated me the way he treats Bleu, he would have never seen me again! Bleu, however, is secretly in love with Grey and finds it difficult to resist Grey’s occasional scraps of niceness. That is, until Grey goes too far for even Bleu and they stop seeing each other when they get to college.

Grey is really a horrible person. I couldn’t get to like him, even when he – eventually – apologizes to Bleu and promises eternal commitment. It is all on his terms and he is only nice to Bleu because he realizes that he needs the “weaker” human. I felt sorry for Bleu because, while I was rooting for him to be stronger and resists the abuse, I could see how much he loves Grey. All in all, I am not sure where this will all go, but I am curious enough to read the sequel to find out.

If you like your werewolves on the wilder side, if you have the patience to wait for some of the mystery around the rules of this world to be lifted, and if you’re looking for a read that is filled with secrets, leaves a few questions unresolved, and has some very conflicted main characters with a less than easy relationship, then you might like this short story.
