Izumi is a Neko, a pet, coveted for his beauty, charm and absolute obedience. Taken from the Neko island as a small child, the only life he's ever known is with his master and friend, Nathan. Growing up, Izumi was always praised for how easily he adapted to servitude, but now, deep inside, a desire burns that only Nathan's love can relieve him of. On the outside, Izumi can play the part perfectly, but only for so long.

When he is introduced to Nathan's friend, Lance, Izumi begins to question his place in the demon world. The life Lance could give him is exactly what Izumi wants, but only if it is with Nathan. Nekos have more power than demons let on and by choosing between the two smoldering demons competing for his affection, Izumi is as good as sentencing the rejected demon to death.

Book Review

As a spin-off from the ‘Neko’ series, this story about Izumi and Nathan is a great standalone. It is set in a futuristic/paranormal world where demons reign, use humans as food, and Nekos – human/cat hybrids - are their slaves. Demon Prince Adrian makes a short appearance, but the focus is really on Nathan, a less important demon in a noble bloodline, and his “pet”, Izumi. Their relationship started when they were children, changed over the years, and is now one of devoted lovers. Except that demons are not supposed to love their Nekos… and the fact that Nathan has no trouble admitting that he does causes a lot of tension in all kinds of areas.

Izumi has always wanted to be free, yet he loves his Master deeply and can’t imagine not being with him. He has only ever known the small Neko island and Nathan’s house, voraciously reads anything about the outside world that he can get his hands on, yet wouldn’t dream of leaving Nathan.

Nathan is an unusual demon in that he flaunts tradition and admits., at least to himself and Izumi, that there is far more to his feelings than caring for a sentient pet. There are issues in demon society that do not allow them to admit the power Nekos have over them, so Nathan has to be careful. He also never wants to force Izumi to stay with him, even though he knows he would die if Izumi ever left.

The inner battle Nathan fights and the need he feels for Izumi to be his equal are things he thinks he cannot talk to Izumi about. But Izumi has his own conflict tearing him apart: he wants to be free to go where he wants as much as he wants to stay with Nathan. Izumi has to learn that freedom can mean many different things, and only understanding Nathan at a much deeper level will give him the answer he needs to make a decision.

If you like stories where the main characters each fight an inner conflict that could tear them apart, if you enjoy reading about men who love each other deeply but have to learn to communicate if they want to have a chance at staying together, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful read set in an interesting paranormal world that is a great addition to this exciting series, then you will probably like this novella.
