Book Blurb

When Matt Killian, a LAPD cop-turned-private-eye, is approached one rainy day in Hollywood to take on a missing person case, he initially wants to say "no" when the potential client tells him he chose Killian because he's gay. Killian changes his mind, however, when he learns the man is distraught because his son, Dane Marks—AKA notorious gay porn director, Danny Dark—is missing. Matt is further surprised to learn that Dane has already tried to take his own life, twice, and has now disappeared, possibly to escape interference in his third attempt.

It's a race against time as Killian tracks down Danny Dark and attempts to short-circuit the man's desire for self-destruction. Plunged headlong into the sometimes-amusing, sometimes-terrifying world of gay porn, Killian is mistaken for a go-go dancer and performs in a live show to get close to Dane.

Book Review

This book is an interesting mix between hilarious observations and occurrences, and deeply sad events. Both taken together ended up leaving me very thoughtful at the end of it. Much like real life, despite the sometimes exaggerated situations, this story is a very mixed bag in terms of emotions it left me with. The writing is excellent, the pace exhilarating, and the number of funny scenes would make this a romantic comedy were they not balanced by some really serious issues.

Matt used to be a motorcycle cop, but after being shot, he had to retire. I didn’t find out what really happened until very late into the book, and let me tell you, it was pretty bad. Matt decides to take his skills and become a private investigator, but he struggles. Both financially and emotionally since his boyfriend, also a cop, broke up with him when Matt left the police force. Matt's newest case is the one that gets him into all kinds of hilarious situations as he attempts to find his client's son. Not easy for him to do, and Dane, according to his father, is suicidal to boot. Matt's attempts to find him land him in trouble, but the thought that he is trying to save a guy's life was never far from my thoughts.

Dane, aka Danny Dark, used to direct artistic gay porn and now wants to go into mainstream directing. Not an easy transition – in fact, he has been rejected wherever he looked. On the surface he is into booze and drugs, and likes the partying lifestyle, but deep-down he wants to be loved like everyone else. Needless to say, it isn’t easy for him to let go of his old world, and he is ready to give up. Except Matt won’t let him.

If you like books that will make you experience the roller coaster of emotions that real life can be, if you enjoy reading about quirky characters with the need to find love, and if you're looking for a read that will make you laugh as much as it will make you think, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do.
