Book Blurb

The night Nick Henderson storms into Martelli’s Pizzeria, he’s just looking for something to eat. Along with dinner, he finds Lou Martelli—pizza cook extraordinaire and Jersey Shore native. Nick is renting a Shore house for the winter while taking classes at the local community college as he devises a way to escape the accounting major his father chose for him.

When Lou offers to show Nick around, heat flares between them as they realize they have more in common than domineering families. But it’s not all fun and games on the boardwalk. Hurricane Sandy blows ashore, changing the place Nick was starting to think of as home. His peace is shattered, and it will take everything he has to keep his relationship with Lou from being torn apart by the storm brewing around them.

Book Review

A hurricane is not something I have experienced personally, but reading about it in such vivid terms and remembering the horrifying pictures and reports from late 2017 certainly made me respect anyone who is brave enough to live in their path. But while Hurricane Sandy is part of this story, there is also plenty of turbulence in each of the main characters’ lives as well as in their relationship. Between trying to define what they want to do with their lives, dealing with overly critical and demanding fathers, and figuring out if they want to be boyfriends, Nick and Lou have their hands full.

Nick has a domineering father who has decided it is Nick’s fate to be an accountant, just like his old man. At the beginning of the story, Nick has managed to find an “excuse” to go to a different college for a while, and is determined to figure out what he really wants to do. Not having made many decisions for himself up to that point, Nick has a hard time defining what that may be. Then he meets Lou and things change.

Lou works in his family’s pizzeria and seems to be happy, but as I got to know him through Nick’s eyes, the cracks appeared. It isn’t that Lou doesn’t like his job, but, if you ask me, his father is taking advantage of him. Lou experiments with recipes on the side and wants to be a chef – but has his reasons for not doing anything. When he meets Nick and sees him struggle with what to make of his life, I think it is a light-bulb moment for Lou.

If you like stories about young men trying to decide what they want to be “when they grow up”, if you want to see what it’s like to live through a hurricane, and if you’re looking for a read that is full of tension, almost forces the main characters to reconsider their priorities, and comes with a few surprises, then you might like this novella.
