Book Blurb

Owen Meade is in need of a hero. Sheltered, ashamed, and ridiculed by his own mother for his sexuality, his stutter, and his congenital arm amputation, Owen lives like a hermit, rarely leaving his apartment. He hardly dares to hope for more… until veterinarian Nick Reynolds moves in downstairs.

Charming, handsome Nick steals past Owen’s defenses and makes him feel almost normal. Meeting his fiery, determined little sister, June, who was born with a similar amputation, helps too. June always seems to get her way—she even convinces Owen to sign up for piano lessons with her. Suddenly the only thing standing between Owen and his perfect life is Nick. No matter how much he flirts, how attracted to Owen he seems to be, or how much time they spend together, Nick always pulls away.

Caught between his mother’s contempt and Nick’s stubbornness, Owen makes a decision. It’s time to be the hero of his own story, and that means going after what he wants: not just Nick, but the full life he deserves.

Book Review

I am going to come right out and admit here, in a public review, that I was almost afraid to read this book because one of the characters was physically flawed and for a brief moment I was "that person". You know the one I mean. Perfection is everything and it can't possibly be romantic and sexy if one of the people is "flawed". Well, my momma didn't raise me to view people like that so I got over that feeling pretty quickly. Good thing too, or I'd have missed another wonderful book by this author.

I was prepared to adore Nick, I mean who wouldn't? Hot, young, sexy and a veterinarian. Wow! But I adored Owen, also, right from the start. It was so hard not to when so very, very many of his troubles stemmed from his absolutely hideous mother. I mean, who says those kinds of things to their own son? I despised her and so wanted her to get her due. I thought a lot of bad names at her while reading this.

Ah, Nick. Like I said, hot, sexy and a vet. For me that's like the trifecta of yumminess! But, Nick has baggage and a pretty big secret that he's afraid to tell Owen about because he's sure that'll mean they can't even be friends anymore. Nick breaks my heart in a few places but he also makes me angry at his stubborn refusal to be happy.

I really loved this story. Both Nick and Owen are broken, although it's actually the man who is physically whole who is more damaged emotionally and mentally. It takes them, together, to fight against their injustices and to realize that the most important thing is that they are alive and they have each other. It's a wonderful story of hope, life, and love.
