Successful lawyer Santi Herrera couldn’t be happier with the direction his life is taking. Not only is he on track to becoming a partner in his law firm, but he’s planning his wedding to Hank Burton, a south Texas contractor who has made a name for himself despite his humble beginnings. The introverted lone wolf Santi and the friendly, outgoing Hank complement each other perfectly. From the moment they laid eyes on each other, they were hooked, and as far as Santi and Hank are concerned, a happily ever after is their destiny.
But fate deals them a devastating new hand.
A construction accident leaves Hank with severe head trauma and brings him precariously close to death. When he finally awakens, Hank doesn’t remember Santi or the love they shared for the past three years. Santi faces the greatest challenge of his life. Can he respark a flame his lover can’t recall? And can he stop the diverging paths that fickle fate charts between them?
Santi has faith in the love he and Hank shared and in the words his father once spoke to him: “It’s never too late to fall in love. All over again.”
It has been far too long since I lost myself inside a Jacob Flores novel. I was caught by the description of 'Please Remember Me', and as I was reading, it became very easy to see some of Jacob and his partner in these two main characters. I was struck by the connection which Santi and Hank had, right from the start, having experienced the same myself. The love that fills every moment of these pages was humbling and beautiful.
Santi works way too hard. It's understandable as he's aiming for a partnership in his law firm, but it's a good thing his best friend Jill finally nags him into a vacation to sunny San Diego. There he meets Hank, a general contractor, and the heat between the two is instantaneous and combustible. Whew, Jacob, you had me fanning myself a few times. *grins* After two years of long-distance dating, Hank finally moves to Houston, and their life together can begin. One year later, Santi and Hank are still ecstatically in love and very close to their wedding date when an accident at a construction site steers their lives into a whole new direction.
“Maybe, but until he’s ready to walk with me down the road we started traveling down together, I’ll carry him. I’ll be his strength, his rock, his lifeline. Whatever he needs to make a full recovery.”
The direction the author proceeded to take me in was unpredictable, and I loved that. Since a member of my immediate family suffered a very severe traumatic brain injury a number of years ago, and, in fact, had some similar issues to Hank's, I think Jacob did an excellent job of detailing and describing the effects and recovery from such an injury. Not to mention all the emotional upheavals that naturally occur in a situation where one person remembers everything, and the other person has no idea what's happened in the past four years.
“You’re home now,” I said, forcing a smile. “Where you remember things. Perhaps this is where you should have always been. Who knows? But what I do know is that this is where you need to be right now. But I want you to know something.” A sob lodged in my throat and strangled my words.
“You’re in my heart. You’ve always been there. You are my home, and you’ll always have a home with me.”
Oh, Jacob. You made me cry and reach for the wine bottle. A beautiful love story, and you told it so very well. I absolutely adored the resolution, and this book is firmly entrenched as a favorite. Thank you, Jacob, it is wonderful!
