Book Review

For such a relatively short story, this one carries quite a punch. It may be set in a BDSM context, and submission, even bondage, definitely play a role, but I did not feel that was the primary focus of the story. It was more like a starting point, or a common frame of reference, for the two main characters to begin working their way toward a relationship. It was quite interesting to follow Marcus’s reasoning in how the Dom tried to figure out how to make Charlie happy. For that is his primary goal, and he is ready to do things very differently from how he has done them so far.

Although the story is told entirely from Marcus’s point of view, we learn a lot about Charlie. The young man has clearly been horribly abused, is desperate for real love and is willing to do almost anything to get it. I liked the way Marcus encouraged him to be open about his needs, it showed Charlie that his new Dom was serious about more than the ‘games’ they have already played very successfully even before Charlie’s previous Dom died in an accident.

Marcus is a fascinating character. At the beginning of the story I had the impression that he was quite set in his ways before Charlie happened across his path. I was all the more impressed when it became clear that he was ready to set all that aside to make Charlie happy. That, more than anything, showed that he was truly in love. He’s still very much the Dom of the couple, but he is definitely one with a heart for his sub’s welfare.

If you like stories with a deeper emotional meaning, characters who are trying to really work out how to relate to each other, and a few kinky encounters that teach them what they like, this short story may well become one of your favorites.
