Parapsychologist Dr. Nigel Taylor doesn’t work with psychic mediums. Until, that is, a round of budget cuts threatens his job and an eccentric old woman offers him a great deal of grant money. The only catch: he must investigate a haunted house with a man she believes to have a true gift.

Oscar Fox, founder of the ghost-hunting team
OutFoxing the Paranormal, has spent his life ignoring the same sort of hallucinations that sent his grandmother to an insane asylum. When he agrees to work with the prestigious—and sexy—Dr. Taylor, he knows he’ll have to keep his visions under wraps, so his team can get a desperately needed pay day.

Soon after Nigel, Oscar, and the OtP team arrive at the house, the questions begin to pile up. Why is there a blood stain in the upstairs hallway? What tragedy took place in the basement? And who is the spirit lurking in the closet of a child’s bedroom?

One thing is certain: if Oscar can’t accept the truth about his psychic abilities, and Nigel can’t face the demons of his past, they’ll join the forgotten souls of the house…forever.

Book Review

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities. Without … confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy ….” ~ Norman Vincent Peale

Dr. Nigel Taylor is the head professor of Duke University’s Department of Paranormal Psychology. Nigel bases his research on the ability to measure paranormal events in a laboratory. Nigel has little faith in the viability of occurrences generated by so-called psychics or mediums. Someone in a position to help Nigel financially has seen some videos of Oscar Fox and his crew and believes he is legitimate. She offers Nigel grant money to continue his research on the condition that he explores one house in particular.

Oscar isn’t thrilled to learn that Nigel will be working with his team at OtP (OutFoxing the Paranormal). But Oscar understands that doing so will bring badly needed credibility to his company. When Oscar meets Nigel, he realizes how wrong he was for thinking that Nigel would be stuck-up and condescending. It doesn’t hurt that Nigel is handsome and unassuming. Oscar is impressed with Nigel’s willingness to cooperate with the team and not take over the investigation. Oscar’s issue with Nigel is fighting the instant attraction he feels. He decides that it would be unprofessional to act upon his feelings as long as they work together. However, after the project is finished, he intends to pursue him vigorously.

Nigel dreads coming back to the house that is connected to his greatest secret and biggest regret, but he needs the grant money so Nigel perseveres. The house has been empty for years and the team has to be careful while exploring it. Usually, Oscar’s team tries to debunk stories of hauntings or other supernatural beings, but in this case, it becomes increasingly difficult to explain away the mysterious occurrences around them. Soon, the paranormal pressure in the house forces Oscar to reveal a secret he has fearfully hidden for so long. If they are going to avenge the grievous acts committed under this roof, they have to work together.

‘The Forgotten Dead’ is a perfect name for this story. It was frightening, intense, and complex. Nigel and Oscar were awesome characters who complemented each other. I appreciated the work it took to come into their own. This book felt different from other books I’ve read by Jordan but even so, it had all the mystery, suspense, and perfectly timed reveals. I suspected everything would turn out all right in the end, but Jordan was still able to keep me guessing. Thanks, Jordan, for another brilliant tale.
