Book Review

“You can't choose who you fall in love with...” ~ Kate Winslet

Charlie Muir, of ‘The Ghost and Charlie Muir’ by Felice Stevens, is shocked to find that he is the only living survivor of his great-great-great aunt, Lucy Muir. He is not foolish enough to not take advantage of the unexpected inheritance. He is thrilled when he is rewarded with a large, albeit old-fashioned house. As nice as the house is, the “boy next door” is even more appealing. Charlie feels an instant attraction to Ian, but even so, he admonishes himself to hold back. An attraction to a straight guy will only end in heartbreak and Charlie has had enough of that.

When strange things start happening, Charlie thinks he is losing it, but discovers that he is not the only occupant of his home. There is a ghost named Rachel, who used to live there. She is matchmaking and is determined to interfere in his life, particularly his sex life, by scaring away any potential partners of whom she does not approve. She begins to show Charlie “videos” on any flat surface that will serve her purpose. From Rachel, Charlie learns the story of Lennie and Robert, two young lovers in a time when their love wasn’t spoken of much less allowed.

A few weeks later, Ian is out in his garden when his neighbor, Charlie, comes over to introduce himself. Even though Ian hasn’t met him before, there is something unsettlingly familiar about him. The handshake between them is like an electric shock up his arm; apparently, Charlie feels it too. Being neighborly, Charlie invites Ian in for a drink and so they can get to know each other better. When the subject of selling the house comes up, Ian feels an inexplicable panic at the thought of Charlie leaving, but when Charlie starts explaining about the other men who he had there before and what happened to them when they tried to have sex with him, Ian has the strange reaction of being jealous! Since he works in construction, Ian offers to help Charlie see if there is anything wrong with the house that may be causing the strange events that are occurring and Charlie takes him up on the offer. When Rachel starts visiting Ian as well, showing him similar ‘memories of the past’, he and Charlie begin to realize that there’s a lot more going on than they could have dreamed.

This is an entertaining twist on reincarnation and righting past wrongs. Charlie is quirky and adorable. His backstory broke my heart. Ian is funny and a bit immature, but it’s part of his charm. The ‘am I gay or straight’ trope is a familiar one. Charlie is patient to a fault as Ian figures it out. The ending is predictable, but satisfying. Thanks, Felice, for bringing a happy ending to everyone involved.
