Book Review

One of the things about two gay men is that things can’t get worse than they already are—or can they? When the two are happy in a relationship it can be the most wonderful feeling, but when the other wants to connect with the family and bring them into it, it can cause problems as it does for Liam and Aidan in this novel. Being in the closet is a frame of mind, and Liam’s refusal to come out to his family could well split up the two men. Especially so when mothers have a knack of trying to matchmake them to women they don’t even know.

Aidan thought he had a good thing going with his lover, Liam, but discovers what he thinks of his Facebook usage and doesn’t like him looking at his family’s pages even though he feels Liam accepts him. What he discovers is that Liam hasn’t even told his family about him – and thinks maybe he’s too gay, and this embarrasses him. As the story continues Liam still denies to his family that Aidan is anything other than his friend. This reality could cause a rift in their relationship, but Aidan is surprisingly tolerant throughout.

For a while now Liam has been watching Aidan on his social networking sites getting back in touch with his aunts and uncles, branches of his family as they are the only ones left in his life. He doesn’t like the idea of him being on such as Facebook as he sees it being aimed at losers with too much time on their hands, but he doesn’t understand Aidan’s need to connect with his family. Liam has come from an ordinary background where his father was a drunk and forgot about clothing the youngsters in his family.

There is no doubt that this is a steamy romance scenario, though this isn’t the only draw to this novel.  Aidan and Liam make a very good couple even if their family only sees them as friends. Sometimes parents can’t see what is under their very noses. I didn’t like that Liam seems to think that he can manipulate Aidan using sex as a way of getting what he wants from Aidan. I found him a little too immature, and this is probably why he can’t admit even to himself that he is gay, let alone his family. I would recommend this novel to anyone who has had to deal with problems in their love life and for those who have had a hard time coming out to their families.
