A prickly mage has me under his spell, and I think I kinda like it.
The first time I met him, I knew I was in trouble, but I hadn’t known just how much. I hadn’t been looking for a relationship, hadn’t wanted one, but it seems that a stubborn little mage did it for me because he’s impossible to resist.
When the NHSO goes on a manhunt for an unregistered mage, I can tell it’s upsetting for Mads and Jude. It’s upsetting for me, too, but even more so when I find out exactly why Mads is so worried about this kid. The more I find out about Madeo’s past and his world, the more I realize how special he is. No one who’s gone through what he has should come out the other side sane, let alone as kindhearted as him. I just hope he wants this thing between us to continue as badly as I do. And I want it to. Bad.
A wonderful novella from Cosmo’s point of view was exactly what I needed after the first book in the series. ‘A Kiss to Revive Me’ gave me better insight into Cos and Madeo plus some of the horrors that Mads and Jude have suffered at the hands of the NHSO.
All non-humans are required to register with the NHSO and then they receive a tracker tag on their ear, red for magi and green for shifter, so they can be easily identified by humans. Just like cattle. In this story a non-registered seventeen-year-old mage is discovered and the NHSO puts all the teams on the case to locate him and bring him to the compound. Cos discovers that Jude and Mads help the Cloaked Freeway with getting non-registered magi out of the country. Registered magi don’t just wear a tracker tag on their ear, they also have one surgically implanted behind their ribs, so until the Cloaked Freeway figures out how to disable those, they can only help non-registered magi.
During their search for the young man, after Cosmo’s entire pride offers to help much to Mads and Jude’s astonishment, is when Cos discovers that the marketing propaganda about the “compounds” being fancy magic school for magi is revealed. Cos is horrified at what he discovers and vows to never let anything ever happen to Mads, Jude, or Logan again.
This is a very sweet novella that I adored. I really got to see Cos’s insecurities and struggles with Madeo and Jude’s dyad bond, plus his own vulnerabilities with his growing love for his prickly mage. I’m so happy that the author wrote Cosmo’s POV as it really opened my eyes to who he is as a man, an alpha, and a pride leader.
