Dr Ben Cook has devoted his life to saving the Mexican Grey wolf population from extinction. A year after being shot while looking for a large pack of Mexican greys, he’s determined to try again. When Ben’s sister hires one of the C-7 shifters to protect him on his mission, he feels an immediate and undeniable attraction to the huge blond protector.

Alrik’s body yearns for his client on sight, but for a shifter who prefers sex without sentiment, Ben presents a problem. Centuries earlier, Alrik learned that love was a worthless emotion that only served to trap those stupid enough to fall.

Book Review

This first book in the 'C-7 Shifters' series fascinated me from the very beginning. I love shifter books, and am always on the lookout for something new and different. And while the world these shifters live in comprises a few "standard" elements (such as packs, persecution by humans, and mates), Carol Lynne has also added a nice extra touch which I haven’t seen used very often. Shifters usually have one fixed form they shift into, but the C-7 don’t follow the same rules. There is an intriguing explanation for it, and some mysteries are explained, but there are enough hints about other things going on to make me believe the sequels will be just as interesting as this first installment.

Ben is a passionate man, who believes in protecting the weak, specifically gray wolves. He has devoted his life to them and is rather lonely until he meets Alrik. Supposedly the man is there to protect him during his newest expedition to find and observe gray wolves, but Ben is quickly interested in more. Not that he will let it interfere with his work, even though Alrik and his dark past fascinate Ben. The wolves come first, and the compassion Ben shows toward the wolf shifters who live with them for protection was wonderful. That ability to empathize really sets Ben apart from other humans and is probably why his work is so successful.

Alrik is a chameleon shifter, one of the few who can chose any form to shift into. He is over three hundred years old, and has learned to distrust humans a long time ago. So far, he has not encountered anyone likely to be able to change that. When he starts feeling a deeper attraction for Ben, he refuses to acknowledge his emotions, fearing they will only lead to heartache. Problem is, Ben is already under his skin…

If you like shifter stories with a difference and enjoy learning about what makes a specific paranormal world tick, so to speak, if you want to read about wounded souls finding the one person suited to heal them, and if you’re looking for a story that is a great mix between action, mystery, and a romance that begins with physical attraction which quickly turns into more, then you will probably like this novella.
