After his Aunt Dee Dee sends him a windfall, Ethan decides to bail on the family holiday drama and go on a college skiing trip instead. Then a reservation snafu lands him in the same room as Henry, another student on the trip, and Ethan stumbles onto a bonus present of another kind: one that could last through Christmas and beyond.
"Never look a gift horse in the mouth" is pretty sound advice, and I guess Ethan's personal version of that is "don’t question why you got a check for Christmas from a long-lost aunt, just go do something fun with it". And Ethan desperately needs to have some fun. Henry, on the other hand, has had more than enough fun and is beginning to consider maybe becoming a little more serious about his "dates". The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, and that is exactly what this story is about.
Ethan is a student; he is lucky enough to have his father pay tuition, but he needs to work to cover his living expenses. With his parents going through a distinctly non-amicable divorce, he doesn’t want to go home for Christmas; he cannot bear seeing them fight. His cash reserves are depleted, so the unexpected check from his long-moved-away lesbian Aunt Dee Dee comes just in time. Even though Ethan is normally distinctly careful and conservative, he decides to have an adventure this time- and what an adventure it turns out to be!
Henry, another student, is at the opposite end of the spectrum. He is all for having fun, but has recently decided to start settling down. And with Ethan being cute, and them ending up sharing a room (thanks to an error in the hotel reservation system), he decides this may just be his opportunity to start practicing his new principles.
If you like short stories that will make you grin with the way both main characters look at things, if you enjoy reading about adventures in the snow and hot tubs, and if you're looking for a nice, relaxed story without too much tension and suspense, you will probably like this one.
