Liam feels sorely inadequate below the belt. To cheer him up, his roommate and best friend Troy scores for them a special invite to an exclusive and hush-hush Bauble Party held in a classy mansion in one of Boston’s upscale districts. When Liam discovers what the fancy soirée is actually about, he gets nervous and insecure, and wants to leave. Troy convinces him to stay by introducing him to Burton, a wealthy, self-made, clean-tech tycoon—who is also an experienced Dom befitting Liam’s submissive tendencies. It seems Liam and Burton are a match made in kink heaven. But where does that leave Troy with his secret and unrequited love for Liam? Perhaps an unusual party is exactly what these three men with big hearts need in order to learn that size isn’t everything and that they are better off with each other than without.

Book Review

The title of this book might make you expect a sweet little Christmas-y story – what with a bauble, according to Merriam-Webster, being either an “inexpensive piece of jewelry” or a “shiny ball that is hung on a Christmas tree as a decoration”. Nothing could be further from the truth, which was exactly what I expected based on the fact that this book is written by Susan Laine, an author whose sometimes deliciously naughty stories I like reading. The way she uses “bauble” it means “ball” as well – except she’s talking about the kind of balls gay men appreciate. More specifically, two of the men in her stories are positively fixated on male balls, if in very different ways.

Liam has a great job, is successful, and lives with his best friend since childhood, Troy. Liam is fixated on the fact that his balls are too small, and when he decides to have surgery to fix the issue, Troy intervenes. Troy decides to do this by dragging Liam to a “bauble party” to show Liam that he has nothing to be ashamed of. Liam is horrified when he figures out he is about to participate in a sex party and almost runs for the hills. After all, taking off his clothes will make everyone see exactly how inadequate he is.

Troy has been in love with Liam for years, but is afraid to say anything that might destroy their friendship. He hates that Liam is so self-conscious, so he decides to do something about it and comes up with a plan - and a man, Burton - to fix the perceived problem. Troy knows Liam needs someone specific, a man who is also a Dom, to be happy. And Troy is not a Dom.

Burton has no idea what he is in for when he walks off into one of the private rooms at the party with two very attractive young men. He is up for some physical activity, even a threesome, but what happens once the clothes come off is more than hot sex.

If you like stories that are entertaining with a touch of drama, if three men getting it on in a seriously hot sequence of events are your thing, and if you’re looking for a fun read with lots of heat and the beginnings of a three-way romance, then you will probably like this novella.
