Blue was born into a wealthy family; money was never an issue. He could have almost anything he wanted, but what he really needed was his parents’ unconditional love. Sadly, his parents wanted him to meet their standards and disregarded his feelings. When he finally went far enough ‘out of bounds,’ they punished him harshly. That’s when he decided to get as far from them as possible. He jumped on a train and became a ‘box boy,’ hopping from one train to another, with nothing left to lose.

 

After Wolfe got out of prison, he moved to Hysham, Montana, where he purchased a cabin called Diamond Willow. After all the turmoil he’d just been through, all he wants is to have peace with no one to worry about but himself. With a blizzard coming, Wolfe goes to Hysham to get some last-minute supplies. To his surprise the people of the town are surprisingly helpful and accepting, particularly since he had expected them to turn him away, as many others have before.

 

On his way back home, he comes upon a young man obviously in distress. At first, Wolfe thinks the man is crazy and wants nothing to do with him. But when the man falls, Wolfe realizes that he has two choices: leave him in the snow to freeze to death or help him.

 

Wolfe reluctantly takes him back to his cabin, intending to let him stay until the storm has passed. But then he realizes how bad a condition the young man, Blue, is in—he is injured, dirty, freezing, and, worst of all, he can’t remember anything except his own name.

 

As the men get to know each other, they realize that, even though miles apart in some ways, they are close in others: both have been betrayed by those who were supposed to love them most and weren’t anxious to be placed in a similar situation.

 

Blue and Wolfe dance around each other, both wary of getting too close; the longer they are together, the more relaxed they become.  Blue is careful to respect Wolfe’s privacy, giving him as much space as possible, and Wolfe appreciates Blue’s efforts and soon realizes that it is comforting to have Blue around. Before long, Blue finds strength in the huge mountain of a man, daring to hope he may have found someone who accepts him for who he is.

 

I’ve been waiting for Blue’s story since I read the first book in the series. I enjoyed visiting with the good people of Hysham, as well as Nimble (Jack) and Morgan from book one, ‘Jack Be Nimble’, and reliving part of their love story, which complements Wolfe’s and Blue’s. Thanks, Jackie, for showing that what Blue and Wolfe needed most was unconditional love.
