Finally back in Massachusetts, vegan werewolf Kyle Slidell hopes for a peaceful life with his mate, Anax Tobias Rogan. But the pressure of ruling all werewolves in the United States is getting to Tobias. Kyle worries that the gentle, compassionate man he fell in love with is becoming like the previous Anax: a power-mad ruler who is all too eager to kill.

An old friend comes to Tobias for help in rescuing his mate from an abusive Alpha. As the extent of the Alpha’s crimes comes to light and the Alpha flees, Tobias sentences him to death. And he seems all too eager to carry out the sentence.

As they and their guards search for the fugitive Alpha, Kyle will do anything to ensure that the power within Tobias doesn’t take control—including becoming the Anax’s enforcer.

This book includes an on-page death in a werewolf attack, the on-page execution of a werewolf, discussions of abuse and assault, and depictions of PTSD.

Book Review

“I really, really hated shifting. The process of having my body change shape, of bones lengthening or compacting, was agonizing. Zero out of ten, did not recommend.” – Kyle

Set three months after the end of the previous book, ‘Bring on the Broccoli’ deals with some of the abusive alphas that have been terrorizing their packs and abusing women for a long time. The almost magical power that is behind much of the werewolf hierarchy may be corrupted, but we don’t find out too much more in this volume. There are quite a few gruesome scenes as the wolves involved are hunted. The suspense is full on from the start: a full-moon hunt is the setting, Boston North and City Pack take part, and their alphas are absent due to a regional meeting. Everyone is nervous because this is not the usual group composition and people are still worried about outside threats. It gets worse from there!

Kyle tells this story, and it was great to hear from him again after a few books from Tobias’s point of view. Kyle is worried about the continued death threats to Tobias, but there is not much he can do. There also seems to be something dark taking over Tobias, who is normally kind and compassionate, and Kyle does his best to keep the darkness at bay by supporting his mate whenever he can. Of course, he remains his irreverent self throughout and that leads to more than one clash with Tobias. Kyle doesn’t like to upset his mate, but what is he supposed to do when he sees things that are just wrong?

Tobias is struggling with the power that enables him to be the Anax. It is almost as if it is trying to take him over, turning him into the same kind of despot as the previous Anax. He keeps fighting it as best he can, but Kyle suspects that may be the wrong thing to do. Since this power pushes him away from Kyle as well as old friends, Tobias is determined to fight it to the end. I think he will have to find another way of dealing with it, because going head-to-head with it is clearly not working.

There are more revelations about some of the secondary characters as well. Quinn turns out to have an ability to see auras and approaching death, but he is still working on overcoming being abused and often too timid to really speak out. His self-confidence is growing though, so there will hopefully be more contributions from him. Also, Quinn seems to have found his mate though neither he nor Malachi are ready for a full-on relationship, which is interesting. There are also two female Betas in the US – a revolution in the old-fashioned world of werewolves in this universe. Harriet of the Boston North pack and Lois of the Prairie Pack are beginning to be in touch, and I certainly hope that we will hear more from them!

If you like werewolf worlds with some “magic” influences and other mysterious goings-on, if you want to see at least some of the cruel alphas and other wolves brought to justice, and if Kyle and Tobias’s continuing story is as fascinating to you as it is to me, then you will probably like this novel.
