The vampire spirit Gray and his human host Caleb have sworn never to drink from a human again. But when a woman from one of Caleb’s tour groups is murdered by what appears to be a vampire, Caleb is arrested as the prime suspect. Not only does she have a bite mark on her throat, but security camera footage reveals her murderer looks exactly like Caleb, down to the clothes he was wearing that night.
This second novella in the third incarnation of the ‘SPECTR’ series had me as much on tenterhooks as the first did. The partial suspicions and doubts that John experienced at the end of ‘Stalker of Shadows’ left me reeling and hoping that some answers might be forthcoming in ‘Bringer of Night’. Just a reminder that these books are best read in order as each one builds upon the previous story.
John was saved from death by Night, a drakul in a dead body, which is the norm for these types of NHEs (Non-Human Entities). Gray and Caleb’s situation is the anomaly. Now John and Caleb/Gray are dealing with this new drakul, a doppelgänger who is trying to frame Caleb/Gray for murder, and John’s slowly forming realization that he has no idea who he really is. He carries memories of John Starkweather but it’s painfully obvious after he confronts his “mom” that something is definitely wrong and he isn’t who he thinks he is. Not to mention the SPECTR -NOLA director who is constantly on John’s a**. For my two favorite guys, when it rains it really pours.
I was hoping for some more answers in regards to John’s situation but the author, in her devious and oh so teasing way, has now left me with more questions and wild speculations running rampant throughout my consciousness. I know the answers will eventually be revealed but watching John struggle and hurt is very difficult. I’ve been reading this series since it began and these men, along with Zahira, are like family and watching one be so hurt and lost is just heartbreaking.
Way to go, Jordan, you continue to impress me with your sneaky and wily ways! *grins* I can’t wait for book three.
