Book Review

I dearly love shifter stories so I am particularly thrilled that this year's Dreamspinner Press Daily Dose package centers around them in 'A Walk on the Wild Side'. If you've read the description for this little gem then you know, with my sense of the ridiculous and irreverent humor, that I'd jump all over reading it. Not to mention I've met the author and she's wickedly funny in person, so I was hoping that would translate to her written words.

A parakeet and an iguana walk into a tiki bar. Sorry, sorry, I was trying really hard to come up with a joke, but I'm not that creative. Chris is a parakeet, and Dash is an iguana, who used to be lovers but conflict separated them. Until they both ended up on the same cruise ship, for different reasons, fell overboard, and landed on an island. Can they figure out where they are, mend their relationship, and find a daiquiri or two?

I felt for Chris, I really did. He and Dash met in college, dated for one year, and then Dash proposed in Maui. Then they were engaged for twelve years with Chris constantly being left at home, alone, while Dash saved the world, minus the superhero cape. They had a wedding and honeymoon all planned, once, but Dash lost his passport in Thailand and spent two weeks at the consulate before getting home. Missing the wedding and their honeymoon, and basically ending their years together. This was a serious relationship issue that these men had to work out in order to be happy, so maybe Fate lent them a hand on a deserted island.

I can absolutely promise you some over-the-top and very dry, humorous moments in 'Bye-Bye Birdie', but there's also a wealth of emotion and a wonderful ending.
