Things are changing again for Bishop, Knight, Rook and Jason. Not only is Jason going back to school, but Knight has bought a cottage on a lake several hours away, and none of them are quite sure what it all means for their family of four.

As Knight loses himself in his art at the cottage and Jason begins the hard work needed to keep up with school, Rook and Bishop call each other often to stay in touch, but it isn’t the same thing as all four of them being together.

Could this be the beginning of two couples and the end of their foursome just when Jason was settling into being a part of this weird but wonderful family? Or will they find a way to make it work just like they have everything else?

Book Review

The sixth volume of the ‘Chess’ series is fun, full of heat, and a great finale for the story of four very different men who have now come together as a family. Just like the “endgame” in chess is the stage of the game when only a few pieces are left on the board, there are very few issues left between Jason, Rook, Knight, and Bishop. They have each found their place in the web of relationships that makes up their reality, the real test of whether they can stick together has come and passed (in book five), and what remains is for them to settle in their future roles, at least for now.

And that “settling in” is, as always, accompanied by a bit of drama, a few open questions about what Knight will do now that he has rekindled his creative abilities, how Jason will settle in at college, and whether Rook can find a place in everyone else’s somewhat rejiggled priorities. Bishop, of course, knows exactly what he wants (Knight first, then the others) and where he belongs, no surprise there. It will also come as no surprise that there is a lot of man-on man activity in various combinations of m/m and m/m/m/m since these guys communicate mainly in the bedroom, and even if they don’t, they celebrate by taking each other to bed. And not for sleeping!

If you have enjoyed the previous books, this final volume is a nice celebration of their love and a wonderful “reward” for sticking with them through all the ups and downs of previous books. If you love to see them interacting physically wherever and whenever the need strikes them, and if you're interested in seeing the chess analogy come to a very satisfying end, then you will probably like this novella as much as the previous ones. While it looks as though there will be more books in this series, and I look forward to each of them, the main story about Jason, Rook, Knight, and Bishop is contained in these first six books - and what a journey it has been!
