As a werewolf, Kieran Woodsmith’s career options are limited. Luckily, he can howl in tune, and his voice earns him admission to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Desperate to prove to his family that his admission wasn’t a fluke, Kieran auditions for the Broadway Musical Review. But when he meets an upperclassman with no scent and strange violet eyes, Kieran is thrown off his game.
On the eve of his lunar cycle, Kieran’s friend drags him to a party at the purple-eyed senior’s house. Distracted by the mystery of Brett’s missing smell, Kieran forgets about the moon. When he wakes up in a cage in Brett’s basement, Kieran realizes he’s not the only one who is more than he appears.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Daily Dose package “A Walk on the Wild Side”.
There are a few career choices that I never considered a werewolf might make – and becoming a singer is one of them. I have no idea why the idea never crossed my mind – as the blurb says being able to “howl in tune” is probably helpful when auditioning for a spot in a college focusing on music. As a result of this intriguing and somewhat humorous premise, the story that follows is highly entertaining and very amusing.
Kieran is ambitious where his singing is concerned. He’s the first in his family to go for the top musical college in the US, and is determined to prove that his acceptance was not a fluke. He is also excited to be away from the pack for the first time in his life, since he wants to be his own man before he finds his mate and has to settle down. As scary as it is to make new friends, not something he ever had to face before, he jumps in with both feet.
But what Kieran finds once he’s at college is not at all what he expected or hoped for. His roommate is a crybaby who misses his parents. The senior student Kieran runs into when on his way to get lunch is an arrogant idiot. Kieran’s audition for one of the musicals put together by the students is a disaster – led by a professor and none other than Brett, the “superior” senior student Kieran hoped never to see again. Then he encounters Brett again at a party, and things get much worse. I can’t say much more without spoiling the story, but I can say that Brett turns out to be a very different being from what I expected. It made for a seriously hot scene though, once Kieran and Brett decide to go for it.
If you like young werewolves who leave home for the first time and face the unknown, if two men who are determined to ignore all risks and warnings given by well-meaning friends are your thing, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with some serious heat, then you will probably like this short story.
