Blake and Luke, from ‘Code Word’ by N.R. Walker, have been close friends since they were teenagers. Even though they have both dated other people, their friendship has stayed unusually strong. Lately, Luke has pulled away and become distant, straining their relationship. When Blake tries to find out what’s wrong, Luke tells him they need some time apart.

Blake is heartbroken when Luke leaves. After years of being close, he feels lost. Drinking only makes him more confused. Wanting to reconnect, he asks his friends for help, thinking they might know more. Then one finally tells him the truth—that Luke is in love with him. Blake is shocked but soon realizes his own feelings are deeper than friendship. This changes how he sees their past, and he decides to make things right.

When Blake finds out Luke is in Mexico, he is desperate to see him. His sister drives him straight to the airport so he can catch the first flight, leaving everything behind except his wallet, phone, and passport. Blake hopes Luke will believe him when he shares his feelings.

When Blake arrives, finding Luke is harder than he expected. He uses a photo taken by a fan and searches the area, hoping to spot him. Blake starts to lose hope, thinking his trip might be for nothing, but then he finally sees Luke. He feels relieved and excited, but Luke’s reaction is distant, making Blake worry he might be too late.

‘Code Word’ is an emotional journey for both Luke and Blake, and it raises the question: Is it possible to love someone without realizing it? Because love can be confusing and hard to recognize, I understand why Blake didn’t see his feelings sooner. Luke knew how he felt, but he was afraid of losing Blake’s friendship if he said anything, so it’s not surprising that Blake never considered it. A key theme in the story is that you fall in love with a person, not their gender or orientation. Thanks, N.R., for a story that is both angsty and satisfying.
