After his sister’s death, businessman Marshall Hunter gains custody of his niece. Unused to children, Marshall struggles to connect with her. In an effort to make her more comfortable in her new home, he hires professional muralist Pace Barlow to personalize her room.
Pace is intrigued by his tiny client, and even more interested in her handsome uncle, but Pace isn’t certain he’s ready for the commitment of an instant family.
When Marshall decides to move for the sake of his niece, will he be able to keep his relationship with his young artist, or will he have to give up love to become a good father for a lonely little girl?
The love baked into an old-fashioned recipe might bring the two men together, but some things take more than magical cookies to fix.
‘Cookies for Courting’ is a fun and very sweet variation on the theme of “magical recipes” handed down by the mysterious Granny B. Businessman Marshall is adorably helpless when facing the task of raising his niece after her mother dies in an accident. He definitely needs all the help he can get! And Pace, an artist with a drive to create so he doesn’t have to live off his trust fund, is equally adorable—yet totally mistaken—in his certainty that he is no good with children. Both men have a steep learning curve, but as the blurb for the ‘Curious Cookbook’ series says: “Food created out of love casts a spell all its own, but Granny B’s recipes add a little something extra.” And none too soon for these two guys!
Pace is a dedicated artist, and one of his favorite things to do is create murals, be it in a restaurant or in a private home, he likes them all. He has done a few, and his musings about his various customers and their “demands” are really funny. When faced with a request for a castle mural for an eight-year-old girl, he is not entirely sure what to do, but the rapport he builds with Alice is fast and goes deep. Pace has an entirely different sort of rapport going with Alice’s Uncle Marshall, but he manfully tries to suppress those urges since he does not want to muddy the waters of their business relationship. When Marshall’s cook brings out the cookies though, the battle quickly becomes impossible to win.
Marshall is a career financial adviser and investor and raising Alice scares him half to death. He wants to honor his sister’s memory though, so he shakes off his misgivings and does the best he can. He may err on the side of protectiveness and make a few stupid mistakes but he does mean well. Marshall practically falls for Pace the first time he sees him, and by the time the cookies make an appearance, it is almost a done deal anyway. And then Alice is kidnapped and all bets are off.
If you like sweet romances about clueless men who need to learn how to raise a child, if you believe everyone deserves to find love, with or without “magical” support, and if you’re looking for an entertaining, gentle read that is full of suspense as well as hot, then you will probably like this novella.
