Damon's hunger gnaws at him. He needs to feed soon before desire overrides caution and he enters the village, where his capture is assured. For Lacey, the sight of Damon drinking from his brother's throat should fill him with horror. Instead, he's oddly aroused. Damon is all his fantasies come true. Bewitching and dangerous.
As Damon's prisoner, Lacey's love for his tantalizing captor grows, but will love be enough to set them both free?
First edition published at Breathless Press, 2012.
Second edition published at Pride Publishing, February 2016.
This short, free read is a nice departure from the concept of the "dark and bloodthirsty" vampire. The more traditional beginning where Damon the vampire tries to assert his will, and take the men he wants by force, is followed by a learning process that teaches him that nobody is immune from love – not even vampires!
Damon is used to taking what he wants. He may have some compassion, since he doesn’t kill every man he feeds from, as is the case with Caleb, but he is no weakling and real emotions don’t seem to be part of his life. When he encounters Caleb's brother, Lacey, Damon is immediately attracted. Not thinking much of it, he takes Lacey as is lover and blackmails him into acceptance by threatening to kill Caleb. At that point, I was not very impressed with him!
Lacey is pretty innocent – but not for long. He is confused and ashamed at first, and angry at Damon for threatening his brother. He is determined to get Damon to free Caleb, and when Damon does, Lacey is surprised, but relieved. It still doesn't mean he doesn't want to be free himself. But asking Damon just makes the vampire angry.
Once Lacey realizes that freedom is not really what he wants, the story takes a turn I really liked (well I am an incurable romantic!). I liked that both main characters learned something about themselves and, in a way, earned their happy ending by doing so. If you like vampires who have a heart, if you enjoy seeing characters learn and change, and if you're looking for a short, hot read, give this story a try.
