In ‘Dragon Awakened’ by Eden Winters, Prince Elouan Thorpe is an Alpha dragon shifter, next in line to his father’s throne, the High Reaches Court on the Adrakus. Today is a celebration commemorating his father’s fiftieth year of rule. Elouan would prefer to stay in his room rather than attend, but he doesn’t want to disappoint his father. Even though he has no desire to be king, as prince, he has an obligation to engage in court politics.

 

Elouan’s uncle Urien has always been jealous because the goddess chose his brother to be king instead of him. Locryn Thorne was the right choice for king because he was fair-minded and reasonable, not power-hungry and cruel like his brother. After tragedy strikes, Sakaris, the king’s mage and friend, helps Elouan escape through a portal to Terra, a world like Earth.

 

Jules Carter is an Omega dragon shifter and prince of Sandy Shoals Court on Adrakus. His brother Donovan sent him to Terra with his guardians, Radomir and Moria, to keep him safe from their war-torn world. Radomir and Moria are responsible for preparing Jules for the day he can return home. While he waits, Jules goes to college, hoping to earn a degree, even though his guardians do not think it is necessary. Because he has always been isolated, school is the closest thing he has to a normal life.

 

One night on the way home from school, Jules is accosted by a group of menacing thugs. Although he had been taught to fight, four against one would be a challenge. As the situation escalates, a stranger, Elouan, comes to his rescue. Jules has been taught to be wary of strangers, but he is drawn to Elouan in a way he couldn’t explain.

 

Due to Moria’s protection spell, no one can detect that Jules is a dragon. Consequently, he can’t sense it when others are dragons either. Both he and Elouan think that they are falling in love with a human, not another dragon, much less that they are both princes.

 

Elouan and Jules finally figure out who they really are and bond, but the danger isn’t over for Jules. Spies have been looking for him for a long time, and now, they have found him.

 

‘Dragon Awakened’ ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’ve always liked stories about knights, castles, and dragons, and this book is full of all of them. The worldbuilding was exceptional; the characters were well-drawn and believable, especially Jules and Elouan. It’s a great start to what seems like an awesome series. Thanks, Eden. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
