Ancient magic. A deadly test. One warlock’s destiny—and one love that could break or save him.

Evrain Brookes thought being a warlock was all about power—something written in blood, shaped by training. But when his godfather reveals a purpose buried deep in magical history, everything changes.Warlocks weren’t just born to control the elements—they were meant to shape the world.

Now, to claim his place in that legacy, Evrain must pass a test older than time itself. A trial so dangerous, many never return. The location: the remote, storm-lashed Isle of Skye. The risk: everything. With Dominic at his side—his conduit, his lover, and the man who grounds his magic—Evrain faces a gauntlet of ancient forces and impossible challenges. If he fails, he loses more than his future. He could lose his bond with Dominic…or his life.

And if he succeeds? He’ll never be the same.

Book Review

I owe an apology to the author for missing this third installment in her ‘Warlocks’ series, particularly after inhaling the first two volumes. Better late than never, though, is my motto… and I’m sticking to it! It was nice to return to this interesting world along with Evrain, the very powerful warlock, and Dominic, his partner, plus some really great secondary characters.

“My brain clearly isn’t working so how about you give me the idiot’s guide to warlock history?”

“Think of a time in the past when the elements have altered the course of events,” Gregory said.

“I think I should have paid more attention in class,” Evrain muttered.”

Discovering that elemental warlocks exist in order to assist throughout history to give the good guys a nudge here and there (think Battle of Long Island in the Revolutionary War and the fog that prevented the British from seeing the Continental army moving away) was as interesting to me as it was to Evrain and Dominic. The warlock trial made more sense to Evrain as he realized that once he passed that, then he’d be allowed to assist with natural disasters or anything else where his powers could be used for good.

As always with this author’s tales, the romance between Evrain and Dominic continues to be sweet and, at the same time, smoking hot in their Dom/sub lifestyle. I really enjoy Dominic’s snark as he remains my favorite character of the two. Evrain has always been a bit difficult for me to understand and I had hoped this third installment would shine some light on him for me, but alas, I believe it’s my failing and not his.

There were a few things that disappointed me with this story. Assuming (I know, I know) that it’s to be the finale, and based on how it ended that is certainly the impression I’m going with, I found it odd that Evrain is only just now being given the information about the role warlocks have played throughout history. This is a really big deal and important in terms of why warlocks exist at all, and yet it hasn’t really been mentioned until now? That bothered me a bit. Also, the blurb gave the impression that this book is completely focused on this warlock trial that Evrain is to be subjected to, and yet, that is actually a very small portion of the storyline. Granted, it was nice to see Evrain and Dominic be able to spend some “normal” time together without a psycho warlock and equally crazy witch coven coming after them, but it was a bit of a letdown that there wasn’t more build-up and action involved in Evrain’s trial.

The ‘Warlocks’ series by L.M. Somerton is an interesting worldbuild, has very hot BDSM elements, and contains a fat and sassy cat. Regardless that I had some issues in a few areas, I can easily recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good urban fantasy.
