When Gabriel's sister, Ashley, falls ill, he is sent to the forest wise one for help. But instead of the frightening dragon he expects, he is faced with a shape-shifting, magical creature named Kym who is both kind and beautiful.
Kym instructs Gabe to bring Ashley to his canyon hideaway so that he can watch over her properly. As the two care for her, they grow unexpectedly close. But once Ashley is well, Gabriel must leave with her, and Kym cannot leave his forest...

Dragons! ‘Evergreen’ is set in a fictional world that feels medieval except for the dragonshifters and their magic. Gabriel is a human sent to get help for his ill sister, Ashley, and encounters an intriguing dragonshifter by the name of Kym. Despite the underlying tension due to Ashley’s quite serious illness, this is a quiet and gentle adventure. The focus is on discovering the dragonshifter’s world as much as it is on the humans’ need for his help.
Gabriel lives in the fictional town of Voxton and leads a simple life. His parents died when he was sixteen so it is just him and his sister now. When she falls ill with a mysterious disease the town healer recognizes but can’t cure, Gabriel is put in charge of obtaining the cure. From a dragon. He is quite scared at the thought, but when he finds Kym after a few mishaps, the dragon is not at all scary or intimidating.
Kym turns out to be a plant dragon, collects rare plants, and uses them to heal those who needs his help. It’s an unusual “specialty” for a dragon, at least in my experience, and I really enjoyed exploring who Kym is, how he thinks, and what he wants out of life. Gabriel and he take their time to discover each other’s personality and priorities and their romance grows out of mutual respect and a shared love of reading.
Other than an unusual dragon who is a magical healer with a big heart, this book offers fantastic worldbuilding. The details of how everything looks, sounds, and smells pulled me right in and provided a great background for the slowly unfolding story. But everything is not as easy as it sounds, and Gabriel and Kym have to make some tough decisions if they want to make things work…
If you like your romances quiet and gentle, yet deeply passionate, if you’re curious about what a plant dragon might be like, and if you’re looking for a read that is as sweet as it is entertaining, then you will probably like this novella.
