Book Blurb

Anax Tobias Rogan, ruler of all werewolves in the United States, is preparing for what should be the happiest day of his life: the day he finally marries his fated mate, vegan werewolf Kyle Slidell. But before the wedding can occur, Tobias has to make it through his first time hosting the annual gathering of the country’s werewolf leaders.

Not everyone is pleased about the changes Tobias has made in the year since he became Anax. After one of the regional leaders and several of the alphas under his rule leave the gathering in protest, Tobias faces a fracturing country–culminating in the issuing of a challenge to fight for the Anax rank. A fight only one can survive.

Tobias has always refused to kill without reason, but this time, the choice is to kill or to die. And all Tobias wants is to live to see his and Kyle’s happy ending.

This book includes violence and death between werewolves; off-page trans-bashing of a transgender man; transphobia and homophobia; depictions of PTSD; and mention of past sexual assaults, including of an underage teen.

Book Review

As much as I do not like reading final volumes of a series I love, there is something to be said for finding a resolution and some sort of ending for the characters involved. In this case, it is hard-earned, in line with the style of the entire series, but it is there. Phew! Please make sure to read the books in order since each builds on what has happened in previous installments. Also, please note that this review contains spoilers for previous books in the series.

Tobias tells this story and it was good to hear from him now that he has managed to integrate the Anax power into himself at the end of the previous book. He is learning to delegate – forced by too much chaos, but he is finally beginning to get it. Despite all the challenges and attacks on him personally, he is determined to make it to the wedding with Kyle. It was good to see him become truer to himself again and he regained my respect.

Kyle is still “only” the Anax’s mate without his own title or position, but he is truly at ease with that now. He has become even more supportive of Tobias after Tobias has managed to gain his mental equilibrium, and I admire Kyle for that. He comes up with a great idea to help all kinds of werewolves by establishing a virtual community where they can safely discuss any issues they may be facing. In that sense, he has defined a very special task for himself.

One of the most fascinating secondary characters, and there have been a few memorable ones in this series, is Ren – a transgender werewolf. Now you may ask yourself, like I initially did, how that would work. The author has found an ingenious and pretty amazing way to explain what a trans werewolf is: an individual who is one gender as a human, but “when I’m a wolf, the body matches the brain”, as Ren puts it. So, in his human form Ren is a biological woman, but his wolf form is male. I simply loved that concept!

Kyle and Tobias have been together for two years, and what an exciting, scary, and surprising two years it has been. The universe still has it in for Kyle and Tobias, from mutiny to multiple challenge fights for the rank of Anax, as well as general mayhem. But it looks like they have found their footing, so to say, as a couple and as members of werewolf society. Luckily there are enough openings for a few spin-off series (‘Ebb & Flow’, here I come!), and some of those books have already been published. I look forward to reading them all!

This is a fantastic series and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in werewolves including those of a vegan persuasion, heart-stopping suspense and hair-raising politics, some hilarious humor to occasionally lighten the mood, and an unusual love story between two equally stubborn men who may be fated mates but do not let that force them into anything they do not want.
