When a book starts in a gay dance club and the heat level is already way up, I know that the rest of the story is most likely going to be the same. But when that heat is followed by an at this point unexpected action sequence, I know that I am in for a treat. This entire story is a mix between action and very hot sex scenes, with the intensity of both main characters at the center and translating into any situation they find themselves in.

 

Michael Oliver is an American ER doctor on a two-year exchange in Auckland. He needs a break after a meltdown that had him lose a young girl in the trauma room. He still has panic attacks and nightmares as a consequence. After the “professional disaster” he broke things up with his lover, Simon, by cheating on him and he has no intention whatsoever to ever have a relationship again.

 

Josh Rawlins is a canine police officer, and his dog, Paris, stole the show more than once. He lives with his eleven-year-old daughter whose mother left them when Sasha was still a baby. Relationships are not in his future plans, especially since his ex, Jase, cheated on him. Even though they are still in touch and Sasha really likes him, Josh will not go there again – with anyone.

 

With both men on the dominant side and equally determined to never have another relationship, it is a minor miracle that they manage to deal with their issues – eventually. Attacks from a drug gang who have Michael in their sights because he keeps talking to the police add significant danger to the mix. The electricity between the men – which they both wish were dislike but is actually intense sexual attraction – increases by the page.

 

The secondary characters are well developed, from Cameron, a flamboyant ER nurse, to Josh’s boss, detective Mark Knight, to Josh’s sister Katie. The whole cast of supporting characters is very realistic and adds wonderful detail and layering to the main story.

 

If you prefer your romances with a lot of heat, if complicated characters with intense emotions are your thing, and if you are looking for an action-filled story that will have you turning the pages as quickly as possible, then you will probably like this novel.
