Hello, there! I’m Octavius Evander. And this is the beginning of my story—well… sort of. It’s not the very beginning. As a vampire, that story would be way too long to write down—think, before the Romans. Rather, this story is about how I met the love of my unlife. Okay, it will be mostly about the cool and fancy detective agency I opened and solving mysteries, but also a little about love too.

So, what does one need to open a detective agency, you may ask? Well, for one, a detective. As it was my idea, and I paid for everything, I, of course, filled that role. Next, I needed a secretary. My beautiful and marginally dangerous best friend Scarlett filled that role. Now, I will admit, at that time, I had not thought further than that, and simply skipped to getting my detective license, an office, and some other necessities.

My mind might have been too full of the fun adventures I was about to have. My hope was that those in and out of the paranormal communities would keep me entertained for a very long time. I quickly realized I still needed a driver, a tech person, and a witch that was good with ghosts. This is the story of how I found those people. And who would have thought the first to walk through the door would be human, with no knowledge of the paranormal—my precious Turney.

CONTENT WARNING: This is a slow burn M/M paranormal romance book. There will be blood, violence and death. Please do not read if you find any of the previous triggering.

Book Review

“The undead don’t care about careers. Vampires are all retirees.” ~ Christopher Buehlman, The Lesser Dead

Turney, of 'Get It Together’ by Shelby Rhodes, has left his illegal street racer job. He answers an ad as a driver for a detective agency. After an odd interview, his boss-to-be, Octavius, explains that he is a vampire and asks if that will be a problem. Turney thinks it's a joke until Octavius turns into a bat.

Octavius is a 2,000+-year-old vampire who, on a whim, decides to open a detective agency. His best friend joins Octavius as his secretary, but next, Octavius needs a driver. When Turney shows up for an interview, Octavius is surprised to find he is a human. He had never considered a human wanting to work for a paranormal detective agency but not wanting to discriminate, he hires him.

When Octavius gets his first business call, they rush to the client's location. Turney is surprised when it's a young girl. She tells them that people go into her neighbor's house but never come out again. Octavius accepts the job; payment will be $20 and seven BTS collector's edition photo cards. Turney thinks Octavius is crazy, but he is the boss.

When they arrive at the suspect's house, Octavius proposes a plan. Turney will pretend his car has broken down and ask Leon, the homeowner, for help. Meanwhile Octavius, in bat form, will look for clues. Unfortunately, Leon fixes Turney's car problems and heads back to his house before Octavius has a chance to escape. Leon discovers Octavius and demands that Turney take his little vampire and get out! Discouraged at flubbing his first case, Turney tries to cheer him up by getting ice cream. While at the shop, they see Leon drive by. Convinced that he is hiding something, they follow him. When Leon starts driving erratically, Octavius is sure. They continue following him, although Octavius has no plan of what to do when they catch up with him.

'Get It Together' is a paranormal love story with wonderfully eccentric characters, especially Octavius. At first Octavius seems flighty, immature, and illogical, but when it comes down to it, he can be "as serious as a heart attack" and twice as deadly. The illustrations at the beginning of each chapter are charming. Thank you, Shelby. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.
