He’s not the hero they deserve, but he’s the hero they’ve got.
No, seriously. Talon wants to know what he did to deserve this. What would make a sentient rock decide that he of all people should be the one to save the world from zombies? That’s right. Zombies. Because apparently a higher power decided that teaching magic to teenagers wasn’t enough of a challenge.
With a ridiculously attractive healer (who may or may not hate him), his sister (who he miiiight have a forbidden telepathic link with), a sentient god-like rock (that can only communicate via yes/no vibes), a disdainful dragon, and a rude matchmaking horse by his side, he just might be able to save the world.
Or die trying.
Meet Talon Silverbright. He'll save the world, but only because a rock said he has to.
“Where have all the good men gone and where are all the Gods? Where’s the street-wise Hercules to fight the rising odds? Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?... I need a hero. I'm holding out for a hero. He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast and he's gotta be fresh from the fight…” ~ ‘I need a Hero’ (Bonnie Tyler)
Talon Silverbright, from 'Grave Situation' by Louisa Masters, is a witty, occasionally charming, and mostly sarcastic second-level mage at the Academy of Mages. His master recognizes Talon's skill and tells him he can achieve even greater things if he learns humility. But the story takes an unexpected turn when Talon, in a twist of fate, is thrust into the role of group leader. His mission? To find the person destined to save them from an army of zombies and the mage, or mages, that are creating them.
When a farmer presents Talon’s master with a rock he found in his field, the drama begins. However, this is no ordinary rock; it is sentient and the source of all creation. During a heated joint council meeting, the rock names Talon as the leader of the search for their savior, which meets with disbelief and anger from most council members.
After Talon gets over his shock, he begins to plan, and the first thing he does is pick two others to go with him. The first choice is an easy one: his twin sister, Tia, who is a dragon rider, and her dragon, of course. Talon knows that the third person needs to be a healer, but when he finds out who he is, Jaimin Kahwyn, Talon is embarrassed. Years ago, Jaimin healed Talon after a bad fall. Instead of simply thanking him, Talon made a very inappropriate comment, one that's made him avoid Jaimin ever since. Yet, the rock wants Jaimin to go, and there's no changing that.
Their quest is fraught with danger at every turn. They face trials such as navigating treacherous terrain, battling powerful enemies, and dealing with personal conflicts within the group. Some trials lead to tragic outcomes, testing their resolve and unity. Yet, knowing how important their mission is, they determinedly push on.
Louisa has crafted an epic tale with intricate world-building and well-fleshed-out characters, each adding depth and complexity with their unique qualities and flaws. The book evoked emotions from frivolity and cheek to sadness and despair, reflecting real life. Thanks, Louisa, for introducing me to new heroes to admire.
