George Carver's life changed forever in the span of twenty-four hours. He won a billion dollar lottery, but more importantly, the man sent to protect him turns out to be his mate. His very human mate. Luckily, Leon seems to know about shifters. He just doesn't know anything about mates.
Leon de Oro spent several years as an Army Ranger before retiring to work for a friend in his security company. He never dreamed that he'd be sent on an assignment to protect the man of his dreams or that the bear shifter would claim they were fated to be together.
People will do stupid things for money. They'll do really stupid things for a lot of money, and George had a lot of money. A billion dollar lottery win brings people—old and new—out of the woodwork. Leon has a hard enough time keeping George and his billions safe. Trying to decide if he's ready to settle down with a mate might be impossible.
Another ‘Bear Essentials’ book had me eagerly hoping for the same kind of sweet romance as in the first volume – but what I got this time around was a lot more. The idea of someone winning over a billion dollars in a lottery and trying to figure out what to do next is fascinating – but George has a lot more to deal with thanks to his status as a bear shifter who lives as an outcast, not to mention his greedy parents. When you add the fact that George’s new bodyguard, former Army Ranger Leon, turns out to be George’s mate – and a human – the sh*t truly hits the fan. What follows is an adventure laced with humor, a romance riddled with obstacles, and one heck of a ride!
George is a pretty unassuming guy, especially for a bear shifter. He managed to escape his overbearing, power-hungry parents who wanted to make him an alpha to increase their status, but even though George has the physical attributes to be an alpha, he has zero interest in any such position. Make that negative interest, actually. George is a super nice guy, and watching him realize that he won a billion dollars, then panic about being robbed before he can claim the money made me feel for him. Luckily he has his cousin, Ford, looking out for him as well as Ford’s parents. They are the ones who call for help and organize a bodyguard for George.
Leon is a human, but he really behaves like an alpha bear most of the time. He knows about shifters since he works for a security company run by one, and his status as a former Army Ranger makes him the ideal candidate to become George’s bodyguard. Not that Leon likes this idea initially, “babysitting” isn’t exactly his favorite kind of assignment. But as soon as he meets George and gets to know him a little, the attraction is not just physical. Not that Leon is ready to settle down… And with everything that begins to happen as soon as George tries to claim his winnings. There is very little time for thinking because it’s all about the action.
George has been looking for a mate for a long time, and he knows Leon is it. But bear shifters are not supposed to mate with humans and Leon is not the mating type, so George pretty much gives up. His bear has other ideas and gets them into a whole lot of trouble. Leon has his hands full keeping George safe, but he can’t deny the attraction between them. The various descriptions of meetings with bank managers, attorneys, and the guys at the lottery headquarters are very entertaining, and the suspense when the local bear clan gets involved increases dramatically. King City is the setting for this story, and Alpha Barker (from book one) and his detestable no-good son are back. Casey and Rob are mentioned and I hope that we’ll find out more about what happened to them (as well as how George and Leon are doing) in future installments.
If you like romances between unexpected, forbidden mates who face lots of obstacles, if you want to see what happens when a super nice guy wins a lot of money and tries to figure out what to do next, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with lots of sweet moments, some hot loving, and some suspenseful action, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do. It’s a great sequel to the first book in the series and makes me hope for more!
