That feeling when you've humiliated yourself in front of your high school crush, and now you’re being forced to share a room with him at your sister’s wedding…
Chad’s craptastic life is about to reach new heights of crapdom. Between his career as a frozen yogurt-slinger and his apartment filled with roadside rescue furniture, he can’t imagine things getting any worse. Then his sister morphs into Bridezilla and insists that everyone in the wedding party stay together in a Lake Tahoe lodge leading up to the grand affair of the century. But when she drops the bomb his crush will be joining them? Operation Avoidance goes into full swing.
Spending the week hiding from Raudel could work. What’s a few odd stares from family and friends when it means protecting what little dignity he has left? All Chad needs to do is make sure they’re never alone, no matter what.
However, his desperate scheme faces a major obstacle when he discovers their room only has one bed…
First edition published under the title Honeymoon Their Way at Dreamspinner Press, November 2016. While it does feature a new cover, there is no additional content.
‘I Do?’ is set in Nevada, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this quirky tale with more than one surprising twist, hilarious characters, and a story full of crazy events. This book gives an excellent taste of the geography, the people who live and work there, and some of the things to do if you’re ever tempted to visit. I’ll just mention casinos and free drinks… you get the picture.
Chad is a super-emotional and less than self-secure young man of twenty-two years who does not know what to do with his life. Moving out of his parents’ home a short while before the beginning of this story is about all he can deal with. He has a job as an assistant manager at a yogurt shop, and while that gets him slightly more than minimum wage, it is not the career he would like to have. And now that his sister is getting married following a week-long extravaganza at Lake Tahoe, and Chad is likely to run into her best friend, Raudel, he is desperate for escape.
It wasn’t clear for quite a while what exactly Chad’s problem is with Raudel, but as the cause of his mortification gradually emerges, it becomes clear that Chad has good reason to be embarrassed. But meeting Raudel again is about as different as possible from what Chad imagined. The angst and Chad’s tendency to put his foot in his mouth are told in such an entertaining way that I laughed way more often than I cringed on his behalf. As for the final twist – I certainly did not see that one coming.
If you like awkward new adults who walk through life all wide-eyed and clueless, if you’re a fan of “old crushes” finding fulfillment in unexpected ways, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read full of every wedding attendee’s nightmare you can think of, then you will probably like this hilarious novella.
