Fraser Gorman finds comfort in unrequited love. It’s predictable, safely distant, and forever unobtainable. Zero risk, all the feels. That’s how he’s lived for years. But then the object of his affection plucks at those feelings, pulling at threads that threaten to unravel everything, and Fray has nowhere left to turn but straight into the truth.
Tobin Tiller is broken. Has been for as long as he can remember. He keeps himself distant, building his carefully constructed walls against the rejection he knows is coming. But when he recognises the signs of the bond and who his mate is, he tries to resist. After all, rejecting the bond before Fray can reject him is what he does best.
But the threat of Lusca makes it all inevitable because that’s how fate plays the game. And the men of Tenebrae Cove are about to learn that fate will always win, regardless of their best intentions, and regardless of the rules. Changes are coming, revelations will be made, and the truth is something else entirely.
Fray and Tobin are in too deep for this to play out any other way.
“I’m too deep to turn back now… And I don’t even know how to become the way I was before your love… Even if it breaks me down, I’m already gone too far inside your heart/ No turning back…” ~… Soong Mood (Too Deep to Turn Back Now – No Way Back Love Song – All In Too Far)
Fray, from 'In Too Deep' by N.R. Walker, has loved his friend Tobin for as long as he can remember but has never let Tobin know because he has never seen Fray as anything but a friend. He is heartbroken about the situation, but for a while now, his feelings for Tobin have grown more intense, causing him serious chest pain and a longing he can hardly bear whenever he sees or even thinks of him. He suspects that what he is feeling is a bond between them; they are soul mates, destined to be together, but Tobin either doesn't feel it or doesn't want it.
Tobin decided long ago that he was unworthy of love. He was banished from his family because he was different; he could shield his thoughts, which they considered a threat. He has never gotten over the rejection. Therefore, Tobin refuses to put himself in a position requiring commitment, believing it will break him. Tobin feels the same physical and emotional pain as Fray; Tobin and Fray may be destined to become mates, but Tobin fights it, determined to endure the pain rather than embrace it.
His friends have noticed a change in his behavior, but don't ask him what is wrong. Kellan is the consortium's doctor and most likely the smartest, most observant man in the group. Kellan guesses what is going on and confronts Tobin. Reluctantly, Tobin admits that Kellan is correct and that the person he is attracted to is Fray. Also, he tells Kellan he has no intention of going through the bonding process. Kellan cautions him that, technically, it's possible to refuse a bond, but it's extremely difficult. Tobin tells Kellan that he can endure the pain if he doesn't need to complete the bond. Tobin's pain, both physical and emotional, proves to be far more than he could ever have imagined. Tobin needs to confront his fears and tell Fray how he feels. In his soul, he knows that he wants to be with Fray, but he feels unworthy. If he can't do that, then they are both doomed to a miserable existence.
Besides Fray's good looks, he is also kind, has a great sense of humor, and is always willing to help others. Tobin's reaction to their possible mating made me very angry, but after I learned more about his past, I became more sympathetic towards him; Fray is still my favorite. I love how the people in the consortium are so bonded; how they care for each other like brothers. Thanks, N.R., for giving Fray and Tobin their happy ending. Now, I'm preparing for the battle that is about to come.
