When Mike takes home the gift of fruitcake from the office White Elephant Christmas Exchange, he never would have guessed that it would lead to a date, or that said date would lead to more. But that’s exactly what happens when Theo, the baker of the fruitcake, offers to take it back in exchange for his White Elephant gift. Mike refuses the offer, but accepts a date with Theo.

Go on a sweet adventure with Mike and Theo and find out where fruitcake takes them.

Book Review

“Mike tried for casual, but he was making a date for the next day—casual was probably out the window.” – Mike

‘It Started with Fruitcake’ is short, sweet, and features two very cute main characters. I personally love fruitcake, so I just had to read this short novella. It starts just before Christmas and consists of snippets describing how coworkers Theo and Mike bond over the fruitcake Theo made for the office Christmas gift exchange. There is no drama, only increasing attraction as both men get to know each other better.

Theo and Mike bond over jointly watched movies and Mike learning to cook under Theo’s direction. The focus is entirely on the two of them and while Mike tells the story in first person, I felt like I still got to know Theo really well too – seeing him through Mike’s eyes was both entertaining and made me feel warm inside.

If you like stories without drama, if heartfelt attraction and growing love are your thing, and if you’re looking for a fun little holiday story, then you will probably like this short novella as much as I do.
