Some cravings will not be denied, no matter how taboo…
Due to popular demand, Mod and Tatou, the hot identical twins who are an integral part of the White Tigers series finally have their own story told. On the surface, they’re mischievous and funny, good friends and a comfort to their fellow White Tigers when they go through life’s trials and pains. But there is more to these two underneath their gorgeous exteriors. They had their own path to the White Tiger, a path fraught with difficulty, self- criticism, challenges and struggles. After all, they couldn’t be in love with each other, want no other in every way possible and not feel conflicted right? So when the opportunity arose to practice the spiritually erotic path of the White Tiger in Tokyo, a place where they hoped to “cure” themselves of their problem, they jumped on it.
However, as they both learned, the heart loves who it loves and they will be faced with the ultimate decision: give the heart what it wants or face the possibility of an unfulfilled yet “normal” life where they are acceptable? Now that they’ve had a taste of heaven, they might just not be able to give it up!
NOTE: Content warning: If “twincest” makes you uncomfortable, don’t read this book.
“Forbidden” is the key word in this title, and the entire story revolves around what happens when a “forbidden craving” occurs. Dealing with a taboo that exists in most societies today, that of twincest, is not easy. Most people will dismiss the idea out of hand, but this story shows that is isn’t always as easy as it seems, nor are the lines as clear-cut as most people would believe. I think it is fascinating that Sedonia Guillone chose to have one twin entirely unconcerned, just wanting to follow his heart, while the other twin agonizes over the implications, believes it is wrong to love his twin brother, yet he feels the tug of his emotions toward the one man who has always been with him – even before birth. The fact this is the focus of the book, far more than the physical relationship, made it very interesting reading for me.
Tatou is the hesitant twin. He loves his brother Mod deeply, cannot imagine ever living without him, but something stops him from allowing himself to express that love in every way possible. When Mod kisses him like a lover for the first time, Tatou knows he is in even more trouble than he thought. Their planned work/study trip to the White Tiger in Tokyo (well-known from Sedonia’s other books in the series), is something he really looks forward to. With its promise of a spiritually erotic path, the White Tiger is a place he hopes they can “cure” themselves of their problem. But when they get there, his turmoil only increases as mysterious nightmares begin to terrorize his sleep.
Mod knows about all the prohibitions and taboos around loving your own twin, but he is far more in touch with his feelings than Tatou. For Mod, it is all about love. How is he expected to tell his heart whom to love? He would never do anything to hurt Tatou, but equally, his brother’s rejection is hurting Mod deep inside. He is all in favor of giving his heart what it wants and dealing with whatever repercussions that means.
This story is about facing the truth of your own convictions, and doing what you believe is right, never mind the ideas of a society that works on expectations of what is “normal” which may go against your own deepest needs. When two consenting adults love each other, and there are no negative consequences (like genetic issues that might occur between a male and a female sibling, which is probably the origin of the taboo in the first place) – who is to say what is right and wrong? In the end, the conclusion this book comes to is “love is love” – but takes this idea just a little further than most people might be comfortable with.
If you like stories that will make you think about your own prejudice toward certain ideas society has planted in your head, if you enjoy reading about taboo love, and if you’re looking for a read that explores one aspect of what love really means, then you will probably like this novel.
