Vegan werewolf Kyle Slidell didn’t sign up to be the mate of the most powerful werewolf in the United States, the Anax Tobias Rogan. But fate had other plans after Kyle was changed from human to werewolf, and now he and Tobias are building a life together. And planning a wedding, if Tobias will get with the program.
Since taking the rank of Anax, though, Tobias has changed. While at times he’s the Tobias Kyle knows and loves, more and more often, it seems as if the power Tobias holds is trying to take control of him. And when a werewolf confronts Tobias about a crime committed by someone Tobias once loved, it pushes Tobias over the edge.
Now Kyle must help Tobias overcome and integrate the Anax power and protect his mate from those who believe Tobias should be removed from the rank—which would end Tobias’s life. Kyle has fought many threats to defend Tobias, but what can he do when the biggest threat is Tobias himself?
This book includes discussion of past sexual assault, depictions of PTSD, violence between werewolves, and a very temporary breakup between the main characters.
“Things couldn’t go to shit tonight. We’d dealt with enough. Not that the universe seemed to think so.” - Kyle
Another three months have passed since the last book, but there seems to be very little change. Tobias is still blaming himself for pretty much everything to the point where he completely loses it early in the book. Kyle is trying to keep him grounded, talks him down when he can, and wants to help Tobias integrate the Anax power rather than keep fighting it. But Kyle is out of options and out of patience (not that I blame him in the least!), to the point where he stops fighting back and has no choice but to leave Tobias to his own devices. Honestly, I was beginning to think the wedding they have planned since the previous book would never actually take place, it got so bad.
Kyle tells this story and I had a hard time imagining how he felt, even though the author does a good job at making me understand him. His situation is just too horrible. The universe certainly seems to have it in for Kyle and Tobias. Kyle says it best himself: “the nobody who kept finding himself in the middle of everything that went to shit.” The fact that he doesn’t have an “official” role is beginning to truly annoy me – and I cannot even imagine how much he hates that. He is a mature man with his own life, or at least he used to be before he was turned. I am certainly hoping that the author will find a way to give some independence and self-confidence back to him in the final volume of the series! Without Kyle’s unbelievable stubbornness he probably would have given up long ago.
Tobias did NOT endear himself to me in this volume. What sh*tty behavior, more than once! And, yes, the Anax power played a part in it, but still. It was as if Tobias didn’t even want to fight his baser instincts anymore. Not the way to earn my respect. Tobias knows, theoretically, that he needs to integrate the Anax power into himself rather than fighting it, but he neither knows how nor does he really want to do that out of fear of the power taking over completely. Quite the conundrum! Because this book is written in Kyle’s point of view, I likely missed some of the information in Tobias’s thoughts, but still. *shakes head in disgust*
Others in Tobias’s circle, especially Arkhon Zane, try to help. But speaking truth to power is not easy when the Anax’s power is absolute and the consequences when the powerful one strikes out are worse than in most human situations.
If you like complicated political and personal situations, if werewolves in trouble are your thing, and if you’re looking for a suspenseful story with interesting situations and characters, then you will probably like this novel.
