While everyone around him is "full of the Christmas spirit," Nathan Johnson, of 'Must Love Dogs' by Eden Winters, doesn't feel it. He has always spent Christmas with his family, but this year, they have made other plans that don't include him; he fears he will spend Christmas alone.

 

When Nathan arrives home, he sees an ambulance at his neighbor's house. He goes over to investigate and learns that his neighbor is going to the hospital. Nathan takes his dog, Oscar, with his neighbor's permission, back to his place. At least he will have someone to spend Christmas with, after all.

 

Later, his sister calls to check on him to ensure he is okay alone. To keep her from worrying, Nathan pretends that Oscar is the person he will spend Christmas with. Although it's a white lie, it accomplishes its purpose: it makes his sister happy, thinking he has someone to be with.

 

Nathan sees a sign that advertises pictures of pets with Santa. He decides a picture of Oscar with Santa will cheer up his sick neighbor. Nathan makes an appointment, and he and Oscar head to the vet's office, where he meets a handsome vet wearing the ugliest Christmas sweater imaginable.

 

As it turns out, Dr. Michael Kane is Oscar's vet, and his dog is Meyer, Oscar's littermate. The connection is instantaneous for Nathan, but probably nothing will come of it. Dr. Kane is way out of his league. 

 

'Must Love Dogs' was a charming Hallmark-like story in that I could tell where it was going, but I enjoyed watching how they got there. Nathan and Michael were genuine, loveable characters, the kind of people I'd want to know. And, of course, Oscar stole the show. Thanks, Eden, for this delightful slice of holiday cheer!
