Book Review

The final volume in the ‘Festive Djinn’ series was the most interesting one in terms of worldbuilding. A lot of the mystery around the supernatural council is solved and the good/bad reversal between Nick/Santa Claus and Arioch/Krampus crystallizes and is resolved in a very satisfactory manner. I was still a little uneasy about this unusual take on things, but I can see how it works well for the DeMMonica world. Now, of course, I am curious about the other books set there…

 

Spencer has been imprisoned in the snow globe that the djinn called Santa put him in for a decade subjective time. I cannot imagine the loneliness, but it shows the cruelty of a djinn who is power hungry and narcissistic. Spencer, on the whole, copes well with the situation but he has centuries of experience of being immortal and living among humans. Though he does not remember who he really is because Nick has taken most of his memories, Spencer is drawn to magic and helping people – the equivalent of making them happy – and that has become his driving force.

 

Winter is one of the most obedient adult fairies/djinns around, but even he gets to a point where Nick’s machinations are just too much. He retains his memories when he is put in the snow globe with Spencer as a punishment, but convincing Spencer of who he really is takes a while. The fact that Winter looks exactly like Spencer but turns out to be somewhat submissive (even though he vehemently denies it as long as he can) makes things very interesting!

 

With Spencer’s hyper dominance and an attitude of “his rules or the highway” the relationship between him and Winter is not an easy one. The other fairies/djinns have a role to play in what happens and some of the members of the supernatural council are also involved. That was a very interesting dynamic!

 

If you like worlds with and inverted good/bad concept, if struggling men who need to learn about their true desires are your thing, and if you’re curious how the whole DeMMonica saga around Nick/Santa and Arioch/Krampus evolves, then you will probably like this novel.
