Beautiful, successful Mercedes Miller is headed home for her father’s wedding, to the Colorado ranch she couldn’t wait to get away from, and the far-too-sexy woman she left behind long ago.
Ranch foreman Sydney Campbell isn’t expecting anything from the arrogant fireball she once found irresistible, least of all a tame heart inside the beautiful body. She’s not surprised when Mercedes thinks she can use her again.
Two can play that game, but when neither notices that the rules have changed, both women find they have a lot to lose.
This story feels like an allegory and from that viewpoint it soars, dips, spins wildly around its central theme, and certainly touched my own heart's periodic desire and longing to go home. Plus, it is the first published book by an author I have come to admire and adore. Amusingly, I think, I believe I like this book more because I have read this author's latest and then some. So allow me to recommend that you read this after at least savoring "Visions" or "Vapor" and then go back home and enjoy Ms. Rose's first work. Fascinating!
Mercedes Miller is a driven woman, she has fought hard to get to her current career level, and hopefully has made her dear departed mom proud. She has never gone home once she left for college to follow her dream that her mom encouraged her to have. Her most painful memory and hurt was never hearing from Syd after she poured her heart out in her good-bye letter tacked on to their *oak* tree. Thirteen years she has been away from the ranch and that fateful summer which exposed her to such sexual intensity. Now, she has been shocked to her roots by her father saying he is going to get remarried, at the ranch, and he wants his youngest to be a part of this most happy event. Oh no! Mercedes has fire in her heart as she plans to stop this idiocy and unmask the gold digger after her dad, Travis Miller. Oh yes, she will go home and get things set to rights with this Nelda Roberts. Overwhelming obdurateness in action!
Sydney Campbell, often called just Syd, lives and breathes ranching, hoping that some day she will have her own spread. She was denied once by a rigid, short-sighted father and her no-goodnik brother, but she is really confident her dream will be a reality. In the meantime, she has worked hard to become foreman doing what she loves to do. She is more than appreciative and couldn't imagine a better boss than Travis Miller. With his upcoming nuptials and some subtle hints about retirement, the near future could hold some promising opportunities for Sydney. All she needs to do is weather the time that Mercedes is there for the wedding. Sydney still feels the hurt that Mercedes up and left with no word, with no recognition of what Mercedes and Syd shared that summer before she left. They couldn't get enough of each other and both experienced such climactic highs. For Syd that should have warranted at least a good-bye. Oh my...I know Mercedes wrote a good-bye letter, tacked up on *their* oak tree. Something is definitely amiss here. Startling and exciting!
Allow me to say, using some local vernacular, Mercedes has some potty mouth on her. She dumps strings of expletive deleteds all over the place. Syd is no slouch in that arena either, but these two startled the bejesus out of me with how they could launch slings and arrows at each other and sometimes other folks. These are two powerfully impressive women, who pretty much met their match between them. I certainly recommend you stay the course, enjoy the wedding, and then discover when or how the loose ends get resolved. Marvelously pleasurable!
