Calliph and Mateo are back! The peace of the shifter pair's calm, quiet life, is shattered by a visit from one of Calliph's old pack members. Calliph must travel to the town of his birth, Naolassel, to speak on behalf of his twin brother, Rupos, who has been charged with murder. But Calliph's decision will endanger his beloved kitten...not to mention their relationship. Can Mateo reconcile with who Calliph was--and what he did--during the war, or is the truth of his wolf too much to bear?

Book Review

'No Place Like Home' by DC Juris continues the saga of Calliph and Mateo that began in the first book of the series 'Soulmates’. It's a powerful story of finding love and redemption against all odds. This installment fills in a lot of the missing pieces in Calliph's past, giving more insight into his personality as well as bringing him and his mate, Mateo, closer together, reaffirming their love and commitment to one another.

Calliph shows great strength of character when he goes back to his homeland to testify for his twin brother, especially knowing that he will be ostracized for doing so. It's quite unsettling when he finally tells Mateo the horrific details of his participation in the shifter wars; but unfortunately it is necessary. With this knowledge, Mateo is able to help Calliph confront his past and deal with his misplaced guilt. When Calliph joined the fight, he thought he was defending his country's honor. Out of a misguided sense of duty he committed atrocities for a cause he thought was just. Tragically, this can happen in any war. Allowing himself to be vulnerable shows great deal of character growth on Calliph's part and strengthens his bond with Mateo. Calliph sums it up with these words: “I'm not that person anymore.”

It impressed me when Mateo stepped up and took control, allowing Calliph time to recoup. By deferring to Mateo, Calliph shows how beneficial it can be to allow oneself to sometimes give up control. Calliph and Mateo discover that their strengths can also be their weaknesses and vice versa. I was in awe of the phenomenal compassion, respect, and trust which Calliph and Mateo have for each other.

'No Place Like Home' is a moving, passionate story reminding us to never underestimate the power of love and forgiveness. This story can be read alone, but I suggest reading 'Omarati' first because it will be confusing if you don't. For fans of 'Omarati', it's definitely a must read.
