I was supposed to be partying with a bunch of celebrities in paradise this week, okay?
But then I made one teeny, tiny error in judgement before leaving New York, and suddenly the paparazzi expected me to give a command performance as “the other man” in their straight celebrity “outing” of the week.
Um, no, precious. So much no.
Instead, I did what any self-respecting, secret-keeping man would do in that situation: I cancelled my trip and fled New York to hide out in the last place anyone would look for me--a weird little Florida island where nothing exciting ever happened.
Or at least it didn’t… until I arrived.
Now I find myself shacked up with my fake boyfriend Beale Goodman, Whispering Key’s most adorable, most enormous, most virginal cinnamon roll—a guy who rescues feral cats, believes in soulmates, and talks about happiness like it’s free for the taking.
A guy who nearly convinces me, with every smile and kiss, that it is.
Stranger still? I find myself falling for the people on the island. Fitting in, instead of sticking out. Making, you know… friends. And for the first time ever, I think I’ve found something I want to run to, rather than from...
As long as I can keep my secrets from catching up with me.
Beale is the calm before the storm, but nothing prepared him for the category five hurricane that is Toby.
‘On the Run’ is the second book in May Archer’s ‘Whispering Key’ series and it continues the zany world of this little island off Florida that is filled with wonderful characters and a whole lot of love. At the end of the first installment Mason, Fenn, and the Goodman family had found the buried treasure their ancestors left for them centuries before – leaving the family in much better shape, financially, than ever before plus bringing new prosperity to the island. Toby, on the other hand, is running to his best friend Mason in hopes of getting advice and help with dealing with his latest disaster. Beale, on the other hand, is just being himself – very zen, checking his horoscope, and handling life as it comes. These two were on a collision course before they ever knew the other existed.
“Because this was my life now, being fake soul mates with Florida’s only hookup-hating gay giant, doomed not only to phone-lessness and penury, but to unending sexual frustration. Yay, me.” ~ Toby
Toby is a writer in New York City. Not just any writer, mind you. He is the unknown writer of Aunt Hagatha’s advice column, a wildly popular column that no one knows is actually written by a young gay man. Unfortunately, he’s gotten himself into a little trouble and as is his usual, he’s run trying to escape his reality. Then there’s Beale, the middle Goodman son who believes the Universe will send him his perfect soul mate and he just has to wait and this “perfection” will drop in his lap.
“For all his world-weary attitude, Toby was naive enough to miss that the biggest part of what made him attractive had nothing to do with his ass and everything to do with the way he’d stuck up for me earlier, and the way he tried to listen when people talked, and the hilarious, dry-as-dust comebacks to almost everything.” ~ Beale
There is much to laugh about in this book, but there’s also a lot to ponder about what makes two people perfect for each other. On the surface it wouldn’t seem as if Toby and Beale should work, but boy do they! I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of their story and I thank May for writing it. Now I’m looking forward to Rafe and Jay’s story as I’m betting that will be just as wonderful as the other two installments have been.
