Canadian cop Kieran Fox has fallen from grace after a disastrous romance with the wrong guy—the head of a drug cartel. When Sheriff Dillon DePriest moseys on up north begging Kieran to come to his town of Lone Trail, Texas, to help him deal with a gang of murderous drug dealers, Kieran agrees, if only to get away from the scene of his own crime.

Soon thereafter, Kieran learns that the tough little Texas town is knees-deep in an escalating mystery. There’s a cross-dressing Cher impersonator, a killer missing some gold teeth and his...er...dangly bits. And worse, there’s Kieran’s growing attraction for Lone Trail’s sexy U.S. Marshal, Jubilee Mason, that he neither wants or needs.

Book Review

A very dear friend, whose opinion I respect quite a lot, recommended that I read this first book in a new series by A.J. Llewellyn and D.J. Manly, of which neither author had I read before. So combined with a good recommendation, an intriguing blurb, and the excitement of discovering new authors, I jumped right in. It only took a page or two before I realized I was going to enjoy this story very much. Once again, my friend was right.

Kieran Fox is having a pretty crappy life right now. He's spent his life working as a police detective in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada dealing with the narcotics trade, and he's darn good at it. Unfortunately, he wasn't good enough to realize his lover was a dealer, and when he did, Kieran arrested him and brought him right in, but when the crap hit the fan, Kieran was smack dab in the middle of it. I could understand his surprise when he got a knock on his door, while he was feeling pretty sorry for himself, mind you, and there's a sheriff from Texas standing on his doorstep wanting to offer him a job. Good thing his dad was from Texas or else immigration might have been involved.  On a side note, Sheriff Dillon DePriest is hysterical, without meaning to be, and I snorted a few times with some of the stuff that came out of his mouth.

When it comes right down to it, it doesn't take the sheriff too long to convince Kieran to come accept a job in Lone Trail, Texas and help them out with the horrific drug war they're dealing with. Of course after looking up the town on the Internet, Kieran is a little put off by all the reports of white supremacists, line dancing, people praying with snakes, and referring to women as belles. Yikes. Although nothing on the Internet comes as close to describing the town and its going-ons like the sheriff does on their three hour plane ride. Kieran isn't sure what in the hell he's gotten himself into.

Jubilee Mason came back to Lone Trail from Dallas when his sister was widowed and left with two little boys. He came home to help take care of his nephews, although returning to Lone Trail wasn't really high on his list of priorities. It's tough to be a cop, gay, and living in Texas, the state that is firmly Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve. At least in Dallas there were gay bars where he could have anonymous hook ups. Here at home his only entertainment is the friendly rivalry Jubilee, as a US Marshall, has with Sheriff DePriest. And, now, he's got Kieran, the mystery man from Canada.

This book was laugh-out-loud funny with sexy banter and great dialogue. I really enjoyed this beginning to a series and am looking forward to the next one, if nothing more than to see what's going on with Kieran and Jubilee. They started dancing around a romance, but Jubilee is in the closet and Kieran doesn't want to get hurt again. Yep, definitely looking forward to it!
